I wonder who he’s talking to.

“Yeah, well, if you don’t get this matter in check, I’m not coming back. We’re going to get a restraining order against her, but you should think long and hard. If she could do those things to her own sister, what could or would she do to someone else?”

Wow, that’s true. Gisele is unstable. That is for damn sure.

“I’ll have Dex bring my case files here, but until you’ve remedied this situation, I’m working from home… what?” I peek around the corner and see him run his fingers through his hair. His stress tell. “Fuck the promotion. This is serious shit. She broke into my place and damaged our property.”

Ourproperty? Ah, damn. I feel my eyes start to burn.

“Yes, it was fucking valuable.”

“Look, Frank, I’m only calling you to let you know what she did and to make you aware what she’s capable of. You’ve been warned.”

I wonder who Frank is.

“All right. Talk to you later.”

I listen for more, but there is none. When he appears at the door without warning, I nearly jump out of my pajamas. “Oh, you’re like a ninja.”

“You could have just come in and sat down if you wanted to hear my conversation. I’ve got no secrets.

“Who’s Frank?”

“Frank Bergen. Senior partner over my division.”

“But Gisele isn’t in your division?”

“No, but he’s going to need to be the one to talk to Jim. Jim Bartholomew heads up her division.”

“So, Dex is going to bring you your stuff?”

“Yes. I called him an hour ago. He’ll be here any minute.” He bends at the waist until his mouth is an inch from mine. “First, I want a kiss from my girl.”

“My breath.” I didn’t brush my teeth.

“Don’t care. Lay one on me, babe.”

I meet his lips and kiss him quickly. I’m not kidding, morning breath is the worst. Even though he’s still in his pajamas, I’d bet he’s already brushed his teeth.

“I need to go see my mom and dad. Can you take me to the train station?”

“I’ll do you one better. I’ll take you to your parents right after we file this no-contact order with the courts.”

“Oh, right.” The no-contact order. We definitely need to do that. “Anyway, you’re busy. You don’t need to take me. I just want to see what’s salvageable at their place and talk to them about Gisele.”

“I’m taking you, or are you going to bring back all your things on the train?”

“After seeing the quilt, I doubt there’s much left.”

Turning on his heel, he looks back at me. “I’m driving you. Don’t argue.”

“Bossy,” I mutter just as the doorbell rings. “I’ll get it.”

He’s out of his office and moving to the door before I can catch up. “Not in your sleepwear. Let’s not give Dex a show.”

I stare down at my flannel pajama set that is so conservative my mom would wear it. “Billy, that’s ridiculous. He can’t see my naughty bits.”

At my words, Billy halts his steps and slowly turns to face me, takes a step, then two, coming back to me. “Naughty bits?”
