“Method acting is more complicated than that,” Irina said with a huff.
One of the spotlights flashed, apparently attempting to blind everyone with theatrics.
Irina flinched. “But I’m a professional, and I will make it work.”
Good.
Then they just had to deal with Knox.
Chapter Twenty
Courtney
“Spill your tea.”Knox stood against the door of one of the buses with his arms crossed.
Courtney and Irina had nearly made it to the buses without getting ambushed by Knox. She rolled her eyes. She was tired, they’d had a long day, and she was ready for some Bax time.
“Can you just leave it alone?” she asked.
Knox seemed to think about that for a beat before he shook his head. “No.”
“If we tell you, can you promise to keep a secret?” Irina asked, more innocent than Courtney felt.
“Secrets are my favorite.” Knox bounced on his toes. “I like knowing things nobody else does. Like how Linx went ring shopping for Becca? No one else knows that little gem.”
Courtney glanced at Irina, shaking her head. “He can’t know.”
“I guess I’ll have to do my own investigation.” Knox lifted his shoulder. “I’m like the Sherlock Holmes of rockers.”
The last thing she needed was Knox poking around, so Courtney clenched her teeth, scanned the area, and came clean.
“Was that so hard?” Knox asked.
“Only if you can’t keep a secret,” Courtney countered.
“I will keep your secret, but I don’t like it.” Knox pinched his lips together. “What happens if you actually need medical help?”
“Then I’ll call a doctor,” Irina said. “That’s what my job description says.”
Knox harrumphed. “You better be good at your job.”
“I don’t take time off in the middle of it to go pee, so there’s that.” Irina totally hit him straight in the nuts.
“Good talk, then.” Courtney patted his shoulder and headed to the bus she shared with Bax.
Linx and Becca had their own bus because they were new, and no one wanted a repeat of the Bax-Courtney kitchen counter fiasco.
Bax and Courtney? Also got their own bus for the same reason.
Tanner, Mach, Knox, and Irina shared another.
And the crew shared the fourth.
They loaded up and headed for Wyoming.
There was something soothing about the highway under the wheels as they moved from one venue to the next. A lull that made things focused and fuzzy, all at the same time. How that was possible? Well, that was the secret of life on the road.
“You look exhausted.” Courtney stood at the doorway of the bedroom she shared at the back of the bus with Bax. Bax who lay spread-eagle on the bed.
