“Would it be girls’ night without you, Kitty?” April asked.

“No, it would not.” Kitty grinned. “I came earlier to pregame and scope out the male specimens for you.”

“Kitty…” April said her name, but she also did a quick scope. What? She was single. It was now totally appropriate for her to peruse. She’d been totally faithful to Kent, even when she’d found out about his… Yeah. But while Kent was the one to walk away, when push came to shove, she and Kent let each other go. She just hadn’t realized it. Would’ve kept fighting for it, if she’d had the chance.

Which was why she now had Jack.

Not that Jack was hers or would ever be hers.

He was just Jack.

Super helpful Jack.

“Are you thinking about a guy?” Sadie asked. “You sort of look like you’re thinking about a guy.”

“No.” April shook her head. “I’m not thinking about a guy. I’m thinking about Jack.”

“Jack’s a guy.” Rachel laughed. “A guy who folded your laundry all afternoon.” Rachel paused. “‘Folded’ being a general term.”

Yes, some of it was more like rolled and tucked, but he was oddly precise about Rohan’s little polo dress-up shirts. Besides, it wasn’t like April had found the time to fold anything herself, so she’d take anything she could get. “I don’t know why he was so insistent about it. But it was sweet of him to help out.”

For the record, she’d hidden all of her bras before he got to that bin for folding—there were some things a girl just needed to handle herself. That, and she didn’t want to have to explain how Mayonnaise would steal her bras to use them for chew toys.

“I’m surprised he doesn’t know how to fold.” Rachel nodded. “He’s always been so precise. Of all of us kids, he was the one who actually picked up after himself when we were little.”

“Tell us other things about Jack,” Simone said, tapping her fingers along her cheekbone. “I have lotsa questions.”

Yelena elbowed her in the side. “Not subtle.”

“What?” Simone asked. “I think I should know about the guy who is taking care of our children. Don’t you?”

“I think the time to ask those questions was about four hours ago,” Yelena said, grabbing the attention of a server so they could put in their drink orders.

“Can I get you anything else?” the waitress asked as she finished with Rachel’s order.

“I’d give a kidney for a salad,” April mumbled. She’d missed out on chili and hadn’t had time to eat her sandwich before they left.

Sadie laughed. “You don’t come to a bar likethisto order a salad.”

“I bet I can wrangle something. Let me see what I can do.” The waitress gave a wink and finished up orders before returning through the swarm of bodies toward the bartender.

“So.” Rachel pulled her phone out of her bag and set it in the middle of the table. Everyone else followed the maneuver. Everyone except April.

“We all talked about you earlier and we sort of decided on something.” Rachel motioned around the table.

Funny, she saidyouwhile looking straight at April. April mouthed,Me? She pointed at her chest.

Simone nodded. “Hand over your phone.”

April handed over her phone because, well, she trusted Simone implicitly. Though, with the glimmer in her eye and the way Yelena shook her head, April was starting to question that trust.

Simone held up the cell camera. “Smile.”

April didn’t smile, she scowled. “Why?”

“Smile,” Simone said, firmer this time.

“You might as well do it.” Yelena’s expression was soft. “So they’ll get it over with and we can move on with our night.”
