She didn’t dare look at him to confirm, because he’d probably counter with a late lunch instead.
“Oh, like a date.” Kitty made wide eyes, her long eyelashes blinking rapidly. April was pretty sure they were the magnetic kind. “I think that’s a fabulous idea.”
April paused for an uncomfortably long moment. Um…
“You and Jack should go out.” She pointed between them. “Just the two of you. I’ll watch your kids.”
“Do you even know my kids’ names?” April asked, because honestly, she never watched the kids and she’d never called them anything other than “you there” and “hey kiddo.”
“Of course I do.” Kitty held her hand to her chest, then adjusted it because of the paint bottle there. “You’re one of my best friends.”
“Then what are their names?” April asked. She gestured to Jack. “No helping her.”
“Well, there’s Peace,” Kitty counted off on her index finger.
“Harmony,” April corrected.
“That’s what I said,” Kitty replied. “And there’s Road.”
“Rohan.”
“Why do you keep repeating me?” Kitty asked. “And then the little one.”
“Lola,” April said, giving Jack what she hoped was a see-I-told-you glance.
“That’s short for The Little One.” Kitty tossed her hands up. “See, I know their names.”
April laughed. “Youare not watching my kids.”
“Oh, please. How else are you going to land yourself a date with this guy here?” Kitty jerked her thumb toward Jack.
“Jack,” he supplied helpfully. “And I’d be happy to have dinner, April. With or without kids. It’ll be a nice break after an afternoon of plotting our next moves.” He turned his attention to Kitty, stuffing his hands in his pockets.
“That’s wonderful.” Kitty clapped gently. “We could rope Simone into helping if April is declining my offer. Now, how do you feel about being a stepdad?”
April gave a gentle smack to Kitty’s shoulder. “Boundaries.”
“Do I look like a fence?” Kitty asked, gesturing to herself.
I’m sorry, April mouthed to Jack.
He didn’t really seem to mind the question, but he also had that boardroom mask pulled tight.
“Boundaries,” Kitty muttered under her breath. “I didn’t ask him anything personal like how much money he makes or why he’s still single!”
“I appreciate that.” Jack said with a curt nod.
“And I didn’t ask him what he weighs, because I. Am. Not. His. Doctor,” Kitty continued. “So it is none of my business.”
“Again, I appreciate your holding back from asking these things,” Jack said, his lips twitching.
“You,” Kitty said like an accusation. She pointed her glistening-with-fresh-pink-paint fingernail at April. “Are always saying you want to get back out there in the dating world.”
“I have literally never said that.” Out loud.
“You want your turn to play the field?” Kitty did a little Vanna White pose to show off Jack. “Here’s a man who flew all the way here to see you.”
“I’m not datingJack,” April said, and yes, it came out sounding like the reason was because he was Jack. In a bad way. What with the emphasis on the wholeJackthing sounding as though he was the one beneathherleague, which was not the case. Everyone knew that’s not how leagues worked.
