Her blood pressure was still way too high.
Dammit. This wasn’t working. Inner peace was as far away as California at the moment.
She peeled open her eyes.
Simone and Rachel both stared at her like this time it might actually be her who imploded and not her marriage, her finances, or her grip on tranquility.
“You said Jack fixes things, right?” Simone asked.
“Yes,” Rachel replied, but she didn’t say the word with confidence.
“Call Jack. Let him fix it,” Simone said this like it was already a done deal.
Uh… “Shouldn’t I at least try to fix it myself?”
“You’re past that, sweetie,” Simone said, her eyes kind as could be, even if her declarations were a teensy bit harsh.
“I tried to call Jack,” Rachel said. “He isn’t exactly responding.”
April’s pulse seemed to stop beating. Say what?
“Jack always responds.” April sat a little taller.
Rachel’s gaze was filled with pity. “Not this time.”
April didn’t care for the pity or the answer. “But he’s your brother.”
“And?”
April rolled her shoulders back, but it did nothing for the knots tying themselves there. “That means he should respond.”
“Jack gets busy.” Rachel thought on that. “He’s a great brother who gets overly caught up in his work.Buthe’s got good intentions.Andhe’s always sending me and the boys awesome treats from L.A.”
“If you give me my phone, I’ll call him,” April said.
Simone shook her head. “Call from Rachel’s phone. Your cell probably isn’t the best idea for you, right now.”
April firmed her posture further. “I have to handle whatever is coming at me. I’ve just got to dive on in.”
Rachel studied April, giving her a long look before finally extracting the cell from her bra. She handed it over—reluctantly.
April turned on her phone and immediately went to her contacts list, even as the thing beeped and buzzed and practically smoked with incoming messages.
Then she paused.
Oh. Oh goodness. No.
Jack had sent her a message. Several messages, in fact.
Her mouth went dry and her heartbeat seemed to get slow and fast at the same time.
Perhaps shecouldn’thandle what was coming at her.
“April.” Simone stood and moved to her. “What’s going on?”
April held up the screen, Jack’s message burned there. “He’s coming.”
“Who?” Rachel asked, pulling the cell from April’s hand.
