“Why not?”

“It’s just not.”

“Maybe it is andyouhaven’t realized it.”

“I tell you what, I bet you that if you call that boy right now, he’ll pick up on the first ring.” Mom stared pointedly at Becca’s phone.

“I’m not going to do that.” Becca picked at the chip in her nail polish again.

Mom shrugged. “I could make it a dare. Then you have to do it.”

Becca pressed her hands to her cheeks. “What if he’s moved on from me?”

Mom looked like Becca had lost her marbles all over the apartment floor. “Then gogethim.”

“I can’t exactly be a rock star groupie as a career.” Becca drew a deep breath. Then she released it.

Mom did the pinching of the lips to the side thing again. “Why not?”

Because it pays nothing. I need to eat and have a place to sleep.

Because I’m scared.

There it was. Damn, but her mom was good.

“When you go get him, don’t do it quiet-like.” Mom set the empty laundry basket aside. “Make your point. Make it loud.”

Becca squared her shoulders. She could do this.

She gave her mom the biggest hug she could, and she held on tight.

Then she called Linx’s sister because she had some work to do.

Chapter 24

Becca

“You’re sure you want to do this?” Courtney asked. After Mom left, Courtney came over. They’d spent some time brainstorming how to best approach Linx. The concept for the night’s engagement had been Courtney’s idea, but Becca was on board because it wasperfect.

Therefore, when Courtney asked if she was still in, she nodded.

“He’s coming?” Becca looked to the door. Linx hadn’t arrived. The rest of the band had—minus Bax—but Courtney had asked him to ensure Linx showed.

Bax seemed to be willing to do anything for Courtney. Courtney wasn’t convinced that would last—to put it mildly. She’d used inventive language to describe her feelings about Bax. Their relationship—if one were to call it that—was complicated. Becca had hoped that they’d work through their challenges, but it’d take work. Lots and lots of work.

Tanner stalked to Becca. He was Frowny McFrowny. Nope, he didn’t look happy. Crud. Her plan relied on the band’s support.

“Britney Spears?” Tanner didn’t turn red for once as he spoke to her. “Serious?”

Becca nodded and pressed her lips together.

“Anything else. Pick anything else.” Tanner started listing famous rock ballads.

Becca glanced to the door as another patron entered. It wasn’t Linx.

“Britney remains the plan. The song fits.”

Tanner rubbed at his temples. “She’s fuckin’ serious.”
