“I’m comfy here,” Xander lied, the plastic chair groaning as he shifted his weight.
“You’re a terrible liar,” I said. No one had ever been comfortable where Xander was sitting.
“Comfy might be an overstatement,” he said. “But I’m happy here. With you.”
He squeezed my fingers, and when I looked at him, he smiled.
“Besides, what are boyfriends for if not moral support?”
Boyfriends.
Boyfriends.
I stared down at a drop of coffee that had escaped onto the lid of my cup while I processed that. Boyfriends.
“Boyfriends?” I finally asked, something bright and warm pushing at my ribcage.
Xander shrugged, but I could feel his fingers trembling now, too. “If you wanted.”
“Doyouwant…?”
"I want,” Xander said almost before the last syllable had passed my lips.
I looked down at our joined hands, squeezing his fingers back.
“Yeah,” I said, heat rushing up the back of my neck. “Yeah, umm. Me too.”
“I wanna kiss you so bad right now,” Xander murmured, leaning in as if he was about to. “But I’d hate to cause a scene in the middle of this waiting room.”
My gaze flicked to his lips, then back to his eyes, warm as ever. Things seemed so much easier when I was close enough to look Xander in the eyes.
“I wouldn’t,” I said, hopeful.
Xander laughed, leaning in another half inch. Anticipation tingled up the back of my neck. Okay, I’d kissed him a hundred times—more than that, probably—but this was about to be our first kissas boyfriends. The excitement was almost too much for me right now.
“You sure?” Xander asked. “Because—”
The sound of a throat being cleared interrupted us.
“Are you Milo?” a sensible-looking middle aged nurse with thick black glasses and bright red lips asked.
I blinked at her. Was I Milo?
Probably. I was probably Milo.
Xander nudged me, and reality snapped back into place. “Uh, yeah,” I said. “Sorry, yeah.”
She broke into a warm smile that took me a little by surprise. “Let me be the first to congratulate you on two perfect baby girls,” she said.
I blinked again.
Two little girls.
Wow.
“I, uh… I’m not… I’m their uncle,” I explained.
She glanced at Xander.
