“Really?” I raised an eyebrow. “Because you’re…”
Hot.
Unreasonably sexy.
Way out of my league.
Xander shifted in his chair, not meeting my eyes anymore. “I’ve only ever been with Brady,” he said softly.
My heart clenched at the way his fingers tightened on his coffee cup.
“Oh.”
“Yeah, I know, embarrassing,” Xander said, glancing at me from under long lashes, pink tongue darting out to wet his lips.
Now Ireallyregretted running away last night. It was still a bad idea for a whole list of reasons, but Xander…
I wanted him. I couldn’t lie to myself about it. I wondered whether it was still kinder to lie tohimabout it.
Or at least, not volunteer the truth.
“Wanna know how many people I’ve slept with?” I asked.
Xander looked up as I held up my fingers for him to count.
“Two?” he asked.
“I know, right? Twice as many. I’m a certified slut,” I teased.
He laughed again, which felt like a victory.
“You did say you couldn’t imagine sleeping with a stranger,” Xander said. “And I know you’re always at work.”
“Right, exactly.”
But you don’t feel like a stranger.
I could say it. I could say it right now, leave my cards on the table, and let Xander decide what his next move was.
I should. The moment wouldn’t last forever, and—
The bell over the door rang.
“Sitting down on the job?” the newcomer—a handsome man with a broad, cheerful smile—asked. “Is this Seattle?”
Xander gave me an apologetic look. “Small town.” He shrugged. “Wes, this is Milo. Milo, Wes.”
“Genuinely thrilled to finally meet you,” Wes said, offering his hand. I shook it, and even though he’d interrupted a conversation I wanted to continue, I couldn’t help liking him already. “Xander failed to mention you were exactly my type.”
My mouth fell open, but I couldn’t quite get any words to come out of it.
“He’s married,” Xander said. “To, yeah, now that I think of it, someone who does remind me a little of you. You’d like Hayden, I think.”
Wes grinned. “He’s perfect, so it’s impossible not to. Don’t get up on my account,” he added as Xander went to stand. “I’m just here to check that we’re still on for tomorrow night.”
Wes was clearly talking to Xander, but his gaze wandered to me as he said it.
“Shit, I’d completely forgotten. Umm. Yeah, obviously. You just might need to remind me again tomorrow. New kitten brain.”
