Oh. He heard that.

“Umm. That, I… I was just… saying it to the duck, but, uh, if you were okay with that…” I scratched the back of my neck. “Yeah?”

Wes snorted, darting in and kissing my cheek again, sliding the hand on my arm down to link our fingers together. “I think you’d make a great boyfriend,” Wes said.

“Good.” I sighed, relieved. “Good, great. So. Boyfriends?”

“Boyfriends.” Wes grinned at me. “C’mon, let’s head home.”

“Wait,” I said, disentangling myself from Wes’s grip. I didn’t want to let go of him, but there was something I had to do.

I headed back to the gate, stepping on the bottom crossbar so I could peer over it.

My arch nemesis, Count Duckula, was still on the other side, beady eyes glistening malevolently in the failing sunlight.

“Did you hear that, you little shit?” I asked. “I have a boyfriend.”

Wes burst into laughter behind me and didn’t stop all the way to the car, but he held my hand again, so I figured I’d won this round.

I couldn’t help laughingas Hayden followed me onto the bed, naked, stealing a kiss while he was distracted by being suddenly tangled in the sheets, heart so full with joy it could’ve burst.

Today had been a good day, duck terrorism aside.

“I made you dinner,” Hayden murmured against my mouth. “You have to tell me what song you lost your virginity to.”

I’d been hoping he’d forget about that.

Blood rushed to my face as I realized that I was going to have to tell him, and I couldn’t come up with a convincing lie.

“You sure you wanna know?” I asked. “Might change your view of me forever.”

“I told you mine,” Hayden said. “Can’t be worse than that.”

“You say that, but…”

Hayden’s face softened. “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to,” he said, so sincere it made my heart ache.

Who could ever hurt this sweet, kind, generous man? I couldn’t imagine it.

“It was Darren Hayes’Insatiable,” I admitted.

Hayden’s eyes widened.

“Oh mygod. Could you have picked a gayer song?” he asked.

“Areyoucallingmegay? Because I can feel your hard-on, mister.”

“I’m calling you gay,” Hayden said.

“I’m bi,” I pointed out.

“Reallybi.” Hayden grinned. “You’re not the only one who can feel things.”

“Shut up,” I said, blushing down to my collarbones.
