And I wasn’t even sure that’dsolve the problem. I’d need to have worked out who it was first so I couldmatch their laptop to the login. Which meant I potentially hadproof, but no suspectto match it up to.
Well, I did have suspects. But I was starting to realize that I hadn’t narrowed it down at all.
“That sounds promising,”Logan offered. “So uh. You’re screwing the client, huh?”
I turned to look at him, unable to hide my surprise fast enough.
A broad, smug grin spreadover his face. “Miles owes me ten bucks.”
Of course he did.
I paused to lean on Logan’s car, parked afew spaces down from the coffee shop. “Miles owes you ten dollars,” I repeated.“For what, exactly?”
“That this was going to bethe client you ended up in bed with,” Logan said. “And you are, right? Becauseyou completely ignored Penny and you even got her number forme, and normally Iwouldn’thave stood a chance with you in there and your hot accent and yourjust-badass-enough scar. But you weren’t interested.”
I’d already given myselfaway, but knowing that wasn’t going to stop me from trying to get out of this.
Sleeping with the client wasone thing. Not wanting to sleep with anyoneelseas a result was… quite another.
“She might not have been mytype,” I pointed out.
“I couldn’t pry you off ahot redhead with a crowbar normally, and you know it,” Logan said. “I neverasked who the client was.Isit a hot redhead?”
“It’s not,” I said. “He’s… Idon’t even want to say it out loud. He’s not out.”
“Oh.” Logan nodded. “Okay,cool.”
“Ask Miles, he’ll tell you.Just don’t… don’t tell anyone else.”
“Secret’s safe with me,” hepromised. “Thanks for not keeping it in your pants this time.”
I snorted. At least Loganwas doing well out of today.
“So I take it you’re in townfor a client?” I asked.
“I’m actually between jobsfor the weekend. One just finished, and I’ve got another one starting nextweek, so… seemed a little pointless to head home. Plus, I like it here.”
“You may be the only personon the face of the Earth wholikesLA,” I said.
I had no idea whether or notthat was true, but I thought Logan could hold up to some gentle teasing, sincehe’dhad a wonderful afternoon and I was still exactly where I’d been when Istarted.
“It’s new to me,” Logandefended. “I’ve only been in California… what, six weeks? Give me time, I’llget tired of it.”
“I hope not,” I saidsincerely. Logan could do with some joy in his life. “Are you planning oncalling her?”
“Are you kidding?Absolutely. I’ve got nothing better to do this weekend than take a pretty girlon a nice date.”
“Are you… going to take heron a date?” I asked.
Logan shrugged. “I know she’sprobably not expecting that, but… yeah? I like dates. You don’t think it’sexciting, getting to know someone new?”
“Uh.”
Well. Meeting Quinn had beennice. Getting to know him had been nice.
I was only now realizing howlong it’dbeen since I knew someone’s life storybeforeI took them tobed. How long it’d been since I cared about them on more than a superficiallevel. I always cared enough to want the sex to be good for both of us, butthat was largely selfish.
Quinn, though…
