“Goodbye, Gavin,” he said, turning on his heel.

“You’ll regret this,” Gavin called after him. “You don’t haveanythingwithout me.”

Nolan bit his lip, letting the door to Gavin’s office swing closed behind him.

His hand shook as he hit the button for the elevator. He’d discreetly cleared the few things he kept in his office earlier, so all he had to do now was make it to the car.

Once he was in the relative safety of the elevator, alone, Nolan took out his phone.

He’d been brave once today. He could manage it a second time.

You asked me to text you when I found my strength,he typed.

I found it.

I could really use a hug. I’m so sorry, Finn.

Before he could lose his nerve, Nolan hit send.

Maybe he wouldn’t hear from Finn. Maybe he’d broken things too badly between them to come back from it.

But it didn’t matter. He could step out from under Gavin’s shadow, now, and if Finn had given him that then he was the best friend Nolan had ever had, regardless of what happened next.

As soon as Nolan sat down in his car, his phone’s notification light flashed, the screen coming on automatically.

Finn.

Nolan took a deep breath, stomach still in knots. What if Finn was telling him to get lost?

Come by the sanctuary,Finn’s text read.I was planning on releasing Ollie today. I’ll wait for you.

A lump formed in Nolan’s throat, tears welling up in his eyes all over again.

Finn was waiting for him.

Heart swelling with joy, he reversed out of his company parking spot for the last time, and drove off in the direction of the sanctuary.
