His heart ached for Julian, who’d definitely been through this before. Ithurt, in a new, scary way that made Isaac’s pulse speed up, his head pound.

“No comeback for that?” Adriana asked. “Done pretending you’re not just a total pervert who’ll drop his pants for anything that comes along?”

Isaac’s stomach knotted up, shock at the pure venom in Adriana’s voice making him feel sick. They’d had fights, but it’d never been like this. It’d never been about the core of who hewas.

Was this what Julian felt like every time? How did hestandit?

“I don’t need to listen to this,” he said once the shock had worn off, heading over to grab his bag and get out of there as quickly as he could. He was only cutting his training a little short, and he could make up for it tomorrow.

Maybe find a different court, if he could. One where Adriana wouldn’t know where to look for him.

“All you ever do is use people,” Adriana called after him as he walked away, making Isaac’s heart pound even harder. All he could think of was how badly he wanted to get away.

She’d shouted at him before, but it’d never been like this.

“You’re disgusting,” Adriana added as Isaac was forced to double back past the court on the way to his car, stomach tied up in knots and chest tight.

He wasn’t prone to crying in public, but this was the closest he’d come in a long time.
