She wipes a rare tear, which means this woman affects her more than she lets on. Unlike me, Becks does not cry.

An hour has passed, and we’re waiting on dessert when I look up toward the bar where Harrison sits with the man who walked up earlier. And sure enough, just like the million other times I’velooked up during our meal, half his attention is on his friend, the other on me.

We’re getting brazen, sending small smiles back and forth. It’s playful and flirtatious, and I haven’t felt this alive in a while.

“Stop it right now, Juliette. Move those eyes away from the bar this instant.”

“Stop patrolling me. I don’t know why you’re getting your panties in a bunch over this. I’ve only looked at the guy.”

She presses her glass to her lips, contemplating her words. “He’s just not for you. Okay?”

I huff, annoyed. “What could be so bad about thisstranger, anyway?”

She holds up her hand and counts down. “One, he’s way too old for you. He must be at least ten or fifteen years older than you.”

“You love older men,” I interrupt.

“Yes, me. You’d get walked all over by a man like him.”

“Can you stop talking about me like I’m some naive child? You’re starting to piss me off.”

“Two…” She raises her voice, ignoring me. “He’s an asshole. He’s a fucking hard-ass. People avoid him at all costs in the office.”

I shrug, “Must be tough being CEO of that big of a company, especially if it’s as successful as you say.”

“Three—”

“Okay, enough with the countdown, he’s an older asshole. I get it. Good thing I exchanged looks with him, not bodily fluids or wedding rings,” I snap and stand abruptly, causing a shooting pain in my leg.

“What’s wrong?” Beck’s panicked voice raises.

I take a deep breath and wait a second to let the pain pass. “My leg twinged, but it’s gone already. I’m going to the ladies’ room. I’ll be right back.”

There are still three girls ahead of me in the queue, so I do the only thing I’ve been thinking about for the last hour.

Google Harrison Davenport.

Harrison Montgomery Davenport is an American billionaire businessman. He is the current Chairman and CEO of Abbott, one of the world’s leading investment firms with over $10 trillion in assets under management. Age 38, Davenport, the eldest son of former CEO of Abbott, Anderson Davenport, and his wife, Caroline Montgomery Davenport, studied at The University of Pennsylvania, graduating Summa Cum Laude.

His net worth was assessed at $10 billion, one of New York’s youngest billionaires, alongside his architect brother, Nathaniel Abbott Davenport.

Last year, Davenport was named one of Forbes’s 50 Most Influential People of the Year.

Ah, so heisolder by fourteen years. Oh hell, that’s a lot.

And he’s freaking rich. I can’t even afford tonight’s dinner. He could afford to buy the whole city.

I read on.

Davenport is aloof even to his peers and is fiercely private about his personal life. Though rarely seen without a beautiful woman on his arm while attending outings, he has had no known relationships in the past five years.

He is the father to his young daughter.

What?He’s a father?

It doesn’t seem like the mother is in the picture if he has a different date for every event. But a dad, that even sounds old.

“Hello? Are you using the bathroom or not?” a girl snaps from behind me.
