“I remind you of a fairy?”

“Well, very gothic music.”

“You’re right. I’m Christine.”

“Hello, Christine. It’s great to meet you.” He threw out his hand awkwardly for me to shake, which I did.

“Do you have a name, or would you prefer I call you Zamboni man? Or Flower Killer. It’s entirely up to you.”

His laugh was more boisterous than before. “Danny. Danny Wright.”

“Well, Danny Wright. Since you work here, you should be able to get your hands on some skates somewhere.”

He thought about my statement and nodded. “Yeah, I think I can manage. Will you wait for me?”

“Sure. Why not?” I noticed a guy suddenly appearing out of nowhere.

“Hey, Mr. Wright. Would you like me to put the Zamboni away for you?”

Danny lifted his head, nodding as soon as he did. “That would be great, Steve. Thank you.”

Steve grinned like the two of them had some huge secret between them. Then Danny returned his attention to me, sliding off the bench. “You’ll be here when I return. Won’t you, fairy princess?”

“Yeah, I’ll be here.”

“Good,” he said then headed toward the door, stopping long enough to twist his body so he could see me. “Very good because if you disappear, I will find you.”

When he disappeared out of sight, I realized that a part of me wanted to see if he’d make good on his sexy little promise.

CHAPTER 10

Steven

Why in the fuck were my hands clammy?

And why was my heart thumping to the point the damn beat echoed in my eardrums?

And why was I jittery?

And why, oh, why upon all things holy in the world did I call my mother to help try to convince this girl to go have a drink with me? Had I been completely nuts? My mother could have easily blown my cover. The answer that was painfully obvious.

I was at the point of not caring whether Christine wanted me or not. My cravings were just about all I could think about. Wow.

Just before disappearing into the doorway leading to the employee lockers, I turned toward where she’d been sitting, my pulse racing the moment I noticed she wasn’t where I’d left her. A whooshing sound grabbed my attention.

She’d found the ice once again, spinning to nonexistent music.

I found it difficult to walk away, especially since I’d created a little nightmare for myself.

What the hell had I thought would come out of my stupid, reckless behavior?

Ugh.

The more important question was why I’d acted like a bumbling idiot and why I’d wanted to possess her body and soul? I honestly had no satisfactory answer.

She was beautiful. I certainly hadn’t lied about that. With her long dark hair, almost all I could think about was how good a handful would feel wrapped around my fingers while I did very filthy things to her. The kiss from earlier in the day had been a sweet and tangy appetizer.

Toying with her mercilessly had been the salad.
