“Lola!” Voices echoed all around. Many of them, accompanied by hands touching my face, moving my head around. Lifting me and replacing me on the ground. The air felt warm and humid, the storm still raging around us.

But I felt calm. Rested.

No matter where I ended up, something told me it was going to be okay.

Chapter 42

Nomin

My fingers reached for her pulse. Iknewshe lied. She wasn’t fine, she knew what was going to happen to her and chose to brush it off.

Her pulse was too weak. She was going todieon us. I placed my hand on the wound and tried to pull more of the venom but only blood came out.

“Fuck!” I cursed, moving my hand to the spot above her heart.

“What’s going on?” Arc panicked behind me, fighting against Marcus’ hold.

Carter was no better, pacing behind me like a caged animal.

“She was bitten by the Dragon not long before she reached you. I managed to buy her more time but couldn’t get all the venom out,” I explained, focusing on slowing her heart a bit more. I needed to stop the venom from progressing..

“Where’s the Dragon now?” Arc asked, tensing.

“Lola’s brother and I managed to get him out,” Carter groaned. “He’s tied up in the back of the car.” He pointed at the parked vehicle at the far end of the cave.

Arc frowned. “Lola’sbrother?”

“Long story,” Carter grunted as Marcus had gone utterly still.

“We need to get her back to camp as fast as we can,” I said, checking her pulse that had slowed, as intended, but a bit too much.

“Is she going to die?” Marcus asked, his voice wavering. “The Dragon said she would. Please, tell me—”

“We need to get her back to your campnow,” I repeated. “I can slow down the Venom’s progression but I need quiet to do so.”

“Slow down?” Arc asked.

“What do you meanslow down?” Carter said at the same time.

I released a charge breath.

“Camp. Now! I can slow it down for a few days or maybe weeks, the time we try and find a cure orsomethingto attempt to save her. But if we don’t act now, she’s as good as dead!”

Dread filled my veins. After all this time…Looking for her, chasing after every clue I had of her existence, and she was dying the second I laid my eyes on her.

I hated to say it, but if she ended up in Hell—

No. She couldn’t go there alone. We needed to get Dimitri. He was the only Immortal I knew who ever truly went there.

And if he wasn’t willing to, I’d find a way to kill him and send him there myself.

The trail was getting cold.Again. Massimo was spending a lot of time covering his tracks.

I closed the motel door and headed to the bed, pulling my heavier than it looked short sword out of his sheath at my back. It glinted in my hand before I placed it on the bed and turned around to take off my jacket, only to stop dead in my tracks.
