“Filming’s going well, I think. Everyone’s getting along great. The cast and crew are friendly and easy to work with—that’s not always the case. My illness set us back a bit, of course, but we’re working some long days to make up for it.”

“Is it hard to get into character when you’re filming?”

“Not usually. Having a skilled costar is helpful though.”

“Yeah, Daisy’s really talented,” Chloe said. “They both are. I can’t believe we’re almost halfway through filming already.”

“That’s amazing,” Mom said. “So, Liam, you’ll be heading back to LA then?”

“Uh, yeah. Once filming wraps.”

An awkward silence ensued, Mom and Dad no doubt wondering how this relationship of theirs would work long term, Sean and Meghan knowing the whole thing was bogus.

Itwasbogus, wasn’t it?

Mom beamed at Chloe and Liam. “Well, long distance is so much easier these days what with FaceTime and all.”

“Of course,” Liam said. “Lots of people do it.”

Sean scowled at Chloe from across the table.Shouldn’t be keeping secrets from your family.

Chloe quirked her brow. You’re one to talk.

Sean glanced away.

Yep. Just as she’d thought. Something was going on between Sean and Meghan, and she would get to the bottom of it before the night was over.

The sky was starting to darken, so Liam turned on the deck lights. They glowed amber so as not to misdirect the sea turtles that hatched on the beach in the summer.

Meghan addressed Liam. “What’s next for you after Chloe’s movie?”

“That’s a good question. I’m still weighing my options. I have time to decide on my next project. It’s more important to get the right movie rather than rushing into something that won’t be a good fit for my career.”

“It must be hard to determine what that is,” Meghan said.

“It can be. I rely heavily on my manager, Spencer. He’s the one who talked me into Chloe’s movie.”

“And see how wonderfully that turned out,” Mom said.

Chloe and Liam exchanged what she hoped was an infatuated look. But the questions roiling inside left her worried. Was she getting in too deep? Had Liam wedged his way into her heart? And if he had, what was she going to do about it?

“Yeah.” Sean smiled glibly. “See how that turned out.”

Chapter29

When Chloe found Meghan loading the dishwasher, she shoved aside her concerns about Liam. She had another matter to attend to right now. Entering the kitchen, she grabbed a rag and began wiping down the counters. “Fair warning, they’re setting up Poetry for Neanderthals outside.”

“Ugh,” Meghan said with a wry grin.

The game was a family favorite, but her friend wasn’t great at giving one-syllable clues. “Good news is, it’ll be a short game. The fireworks start in half an hour.”

“Speaking of fireworks...” Meghan flashed a grin at Chloe. “Is it just me or are there somerealsparks flying between you guys?”

Chloe’s cheeks warmed. She hadn’t yet processed her feelings on the matter. Anyway, Meghan had offered the perfect segue for the conversation she’d planned. “Funny you say that—I was about to ask you the same thing.”

Meghan let out a nervous chuckle. “What do you mean?”

She decided on the direct approach. “Is there something going on between you and Sean?”
