“You have her personal number?”
“Small town. I’ll call you back in a minute.”
They ended the call. Liam scooped the pills back into the containerwith hands that were now shaking. He pocketed the bottle, then fetched Chloe a glass of water. When he returned she was still doling out affection to Buttercup like she hadn’t seen her in a year.
The cat snarled at her.
“Okay here, why don’t we give Buttercup a little break.” Liam rescued the cat from Chloe’s death grip.
She pouted as the cat leapt from the bed and hightailed it from the room as if her tail were on fire.
Chloe stared pitifully up at him from her pillow. “I’m sick.”
He eased down on the edge of her bed. “I know. I’m sorry about that.”
“You’d better go, mister, or you’ll get sick too.”
“I’ve already been sick, remember? I can’t get it again.”
“Oh yeah.” She took his hand again, set it against her cheek, and closed her eyes on a sigh.
Maybe he should give her Tylenol for that fever. But it would probably be better to wait and sort out this other situation.
A few minutes later a call came in on Chloe’s phone. He picked it up, letting her keep his hand since she seemed so attached to it. “Hey, what’d she say?”
“She’s on her way over. How’s Chloe doing?”
The woman in question blinked up at him as if she were working out a puzzle and whispered, “Liam Hamilton.”
“Um, much the same. Doctors do house calls here?”
“No, but Dr.Angela is good friends with Chloe’s mom and also my godmother. She’s worried Chloe’s having a bad reaction to that medication.”
“That can’t be good.”
Chapter25
Liam closed the door and sagged against it. Dr.Angela had said Chloe was experiencing a rare side effect to the prescription and told him to discard the pills. Her vitals were normal though, and the effects would wear off as the medication cleared her system. Once she’d made the diagnosis, she allowed Chloe to take the Tylenol for her fever and sore throat.
The doctor had also recommended that someone stay with her until she returned to normal. And since he was here anyway...
He pushed off the door. “Looks like it’s you and me keeping watch tonight, Buttercup.”
The cat purred as Liam swept her up in his arms and went to check on Chloe.
She was blinking at the ceiling and reached a hand up as if to touch it. “Hi there. I come in peace. Or you come in peace.” She caught sight of Liam. “There’s a UFO in my room. See it?”
His lips twitched. “That’s a ceiling fixture, sweetheart.”
“You sure? It’s all spacey and it’s moving. See it moving?”
He set Buttercup beside her and her face brightened. “Butter Butter Boo Boo! Come to Mommy.”
Liam grabbed Chloe’s phone and called Meghan back.
She answered on the first ring, concern in her rushed tone. “What did Angela say?”
“She’ll be fine.” Liam passed on the information the doctor hadgiven him and assured Meghan he’d stay with her until morning, when he had to go on set.
