“That’s something, at least,” Allison muttered low. “But what about Tommy? You said he hasn’t been arrested yet?”

A natural silence fell between the three, and Liam used the moment to process all they’d been told. Bruce gave up Allison and Maddie’s location for money so he could pay off his debts and stay out of jail. Only by confessing to all he’d done, he’s going to end up there anyway.

Which made him wonder aloud, “Why come forward with all of this? And why now?”

“That’s the other reason I called. We’re still confirming the details of Lamont’s statement, so I don’t want you to get too alarmed.”

“But?” Liam asked. Because there was definitely a but to the other man’s statement.”

The sound of Knox’s sigh filled the phone’s speakers. “Lamont said Gallo’s there. In Seattle.”

“He’swhat?” Liam had to work not to yell.

Beside him, Allison whispered a terrified, “Oh, God.”

He gripped the phone so tightly, he was surprised the damn thing didn’t shatter in his palm. “How long?”

The other man took what felt like forever before answering with a deep, regrettable, “Since last night.”

“Lastnight?”Allison repeated Knox’s shocking words.

No, no, no, no, no.

This couldn’t be happening. Not now. Not after having the most wonderful last few days.

“I don’t know that for sure, and even if Gallo is there.” Knox continued. “I don’t even know that he knows how to find you.”

“He knows.”

Another voice came through the phone. This time, it was a woman.

“Hang on a sec,” Knox spoke directly to them before shifting his attention to whoever had just joined him. “What are you talking about?”

Listening intently, Allison and Liam paid close attention to the conversation between their new detective pal and a woman they could only assume was the man’s colleague. Her heart raced and she was filled with nauseating fear.

If Tommy really was in Chicago, it was only a matter of time before?—

“We just flipped Borelli,” the woman they could hear through the phone announced with pride. “He agreed to a deal, and he’s singing like a freaking sparrow.”

Unable to keep quiet, Allison had to be clear on what they were discussing. “You said he knows where we are?”

After a moment of pause—presumably so Knox could give the other woman the green light to discuss the case with them—she told them the devastating news.

“Borelli said the security guard overheard Sloane talking with Mrs. Gallo the other night on the phone. From what our guy says, the guard stood outside the office and listened to the conversation. When he heard you were holed up with a guy named Cutler, the guard went straight to Tommy Gallo with the news.”

“Oh, Bruce.” Allison put a hand over her mouth as more tears rushed to the surface in waves.

Maddie loved you so much. How could you?

“And you’resurehe knows where we are?” Liam asked next.

“I assumed Detective Knox would want proof, as did I,’ the woman shared. “So I got him to give up the address. Tell me if this is you.”

Allison’s heart sank like a ball of lead as she rattled off Liam’s home address.

“Liam?” She looked to him for guidance. “H-He found us.”

Again.
