“More lies, Riley? I expected more from you than that.”

Shit. “What do you mean, more lies?”

“You told several during your press conference. Those hurtful things you said about me rolled right off those pretty lips as if they were the gospel.”

“That’s funny.” Riley lost a bit of her cool. “I didn’t think you had any feelings. I mean, you rape and kill innocent women for fun.”

“Innocent.” He barked out a harsh laugh. “Those women were nothing but whores. Trash who sold themselves for drugs or money. Trust me, Detective. Those women were far from innocent.”

It was the first time since answering the call that Riley heard any sort of inkling of emotion. In reality, she knew the man was incapable of feeling much of anything. Agent Killian’srealprofile—which he’d shared with her and Eric after the press conference—had taught her that.

Still, she’d definitely pushed a button or two with her comment. Something she might be able to use against him.

“And Maggie?” she challenged. “What about her? She’s not like those other women.”

“You’re correct. Dr. Cartwright is smart, sophisticated, well-educated...nothing like the women I’ve chosen to set free.”

Set free, my ass.

“So why take her? You just said she’s nothing like—”

“Dr. Cartwright is serving a purpose.”

Riley ground her back teeth together, her patience wearing dangerously thin. “And what purpose would that be?”

“You’ll see. Now, as much as I’ve enjoyed this little chat, I really must go. I want to spend some time with your sweet friend while I still can.”

“No!”

She looked to Eric, hoping to see what, she wasn’t sure. Her lungs froze with fear for Maggie.

“Don’t worry, Detective.” The killer kept the same soothing voice as before. “We’ll talk again, soon.”

“Wait!” Riley begged. “Please. Don’t hurt her!”

But she was too late. He’d already ended the call.
