Eric felt his lips twitch. At the same time, a feeling of warmth settled deep inside his chest. It was strange and unsettling, and part of him couldn’t help but fear the possibility of what it all meant.

He hadn’t slept with anyone else since Riley. Hadn’t eventhoughtabout it. But that didn’t mean she felt the same way.

I’ll kill any man who tries to touch her.

Yeah, it was those kinds of thoughts that had Eric questioning their casual arrangement. Because that’s all it was supposed to be. Casual.

No strings.

No commitment.

Just fun, partners-with-benefits sex.

Eric wasn’t supposed to get murderous thoughts about another man wanting to touch her. He wasn’t supposed to consider herhisand no one else’s.

Yet, lately, that was exactly what he’d been thinking. And it was the exact way he’d been feeling.

And that was a problem.

He liked the way things were. He couldn’t fall for his partner. Hecouldn’t.

But damn if she wasn’t making it hard as hell not to.

Chapter 2

Riley closed her eyes, letting the soothing hot water rinse away the day.

After leaving this morning’s crime scene, she and Eric had shared coffee and a late breakfast at one of their favorite go-to spots, and then headed back to the precinct to start a file on their newest case.

Thanks to the prints Daniel ran for Maggie, they now knew their victim’s name was Kennedy Davis. She was seventeen and, according to her mom, hadn’t been home in months.

Not that Riley could blame her.

Wolf Creek—a neighborhood located in South Dallas—was where Kennedy had grown up. The area left much to be desired, but then again, so did her mother.

The woman seemed more upset over having to wait for the autopsy results before claiming Kennedy’s death benefits than she did over the fact that she’d lost her only daughter. Riley had to literally bite down on her tongue to keep from lashing out at the heartless woman.
