“So what do we do, now?”

“For now, we get some sleep. Tomorrow, hopefully, we catch a killer.”

Yes. Catching a killer sounded like a damn good plan. One she would put all her focus on starting tomorrow.

But tonight...tonight, she’d been asking aboutthem.

“And after that?” Riley watched him closely.

“After that, I say we see where this thing takes us.” He leaned in, pressing a soft kiss on her bare shoulder. “What do you think about that?”

Riley reached up and cupped his rugged cheek with her palm. Her lips feathered across his as she told him, “I think that’s the best thing I’ve heard all day.”

Chapter 5

“He’s going to givethe case to homicide.”

Eric took his eyes off the road to look at his partner. “Cap wouldn’t do that,” he said of Thomas Vogel, their unit’s captain.

Riley pulled her bottom lip between her teeth, making his dick jump behind his zipper.

Memories of last night had been playing through his head on loop all morning. Her riding him on the couch. His going down on her in the shower.

As equally important as the physical pleasure they’d shared, Eric also couldn’t stop thinking about the conversation they’d had afterward, in her bed.

Things had finally changed between them. Their casual, non-committal relationship had shifted into something different. Somethingmore.

And he’d had to work to keep the goofy grin off his face ever since.

“I thought the same thing about my old sergeant.” Riley stared out the passenger window. “Look how that turned out.”

“Hey.” Eric placed a hand on her denim-covered thigh. “Cap is different. He gets it. There’s no way he’s gonna order us in from the field just to tell us he’s letting another unit investigate a serial killer. Especially not one we have an obvious connection to.”

He fuckinghatedthat Riley was the connection. The man in him—the one who was falling in love with her—wanted to whisk her away and keep her safe and protected until the son of a bitch was caught.
