Chapter 16

––––––––

The next few days werelike a blur. Nurses and doctors invaded Lexi’s space nearly every waking second. Even with heavy pain meds, sleep was nearly impossible with all the blood-pressure checks, wound checks and re-dressing, and chart updating. By day three, Lexi was ready to pull her hair out.

“I want to see Joe.”

Dressed in a pair of yoga pants and an oversized t-shirt, Lexi looked up from her hospital bed and waited for Trevor’s response. She had a feeling she already knew what he was going to say.

As expected, Trevor gave her the same, perfectly pleasant smile he’d been wearing since she woke up in the hospital three days ago. “I know you do, angel. But his room is on the floor above this one. I’m not sure you’re ready to be up and moving that much, yet.”

I already had one mother. I don’t need another one.Guilt instantly assaulted her as she finished that thought. Trevor had literally risked his life to save hers and hadn’t left her side ever since. He’d bent over backward making sure she had everything she needed.

She should be ashamed of herself.

It was just so frustrating. Lexi was fully aware of the fact that she wasn’t one hundred percent yet and wouldn’t be for at least a couple more weeks. She also knew she was perfectly capable of riding in a wheelchair up an elevator and down the hall to see one of her dear friends. One who’d nearly died because of her.

No, not because of her. She wasn’t to blame for Anthony Young’s actions, and neither was Trevor. However, Lexi suspected he didn’t share those same beliefs.

That would explain why he’d been her shadow every second of every day since he’d found her in that awful warehouse. Trevor had been doting and kind the entire time.

But he hadn’t kissed her like he had before all this happened. He definitely hadn’t said the three little words he’d whispered to her before she’d passed out from blood loss that day.Because he hadn’t meant them.

Accepting that reality, Lexi woke up this morning and decided she was going to do whatshewanted for a change. And right now, she wanted to see Joe. If Trevor wouldn’t take her—

Lexi slowly swung her legs over the side of the bed.

“What are you doing?” He was at her side in a heartbeat. “Here, let me help you.”

“I don’t need your help, Trevor,” Lexi said more shortly than she’d intended. His surprised expression made her feel even worse than before. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to sound so snippy. It’s just...I know I can get myself into that chair.” She looked at the wheelchair parked in the corner of her room. “And I was hoping you’d push me to see Joe. If you don’t want to, I can see if Olivia can help me.”

“No,” Trevor protested quickly. “There’s no need to call Olivia. I’ll help you.”

She could tell he wasn’t happy about it, but at the moment, she didn’t care. She was tired of being in that damn bed. Plus, if he didn’t feel the same for her as she did for him, there really was no need to keep hovering over her as if he did.

“Thanks,” Lexi mumbled as he helped her into the wheelchair. She hid her grimace as the stitches in her side pulled. Resting her partially-casted hand in her lap, she sat quietly while Trevor pushed her out of the room.
