His eyes slid to Lexi’s face, his own heart breaking from the pain and fear he found there. She was panting and groaning, but Trevor could tell she was trying to stay strong. Just like Olivia had said.

“Goddammit,” Grant bit out from behind him. None of the guys could stomach watching a man hurting a woman. “Tell me you’ve got something that will lead us to this fucker.”

“I’m working on it.” Derek’s fingers flew over the keyboard. As he typed, a bunch of words and numbers no one else in the room could understand scrolled quickly across the second monitor. “The problem is this wasn’t streaming live. If he’d send us one of those, IknowI could get in.”

“Jesus, this is so fucked up,” Coop said, walking away toward the kitchen.

“How did that make you feel, Soldier Boy?” The man from the video asked. “Are you sick to your stomach? Feel like you’re gonna puke because you had to just sit there and watch the woman you love be tortured?”

He stepped closer to the camera like before. “You do love Alexis, don’t you, Trevor? I saw the way you looked at her when the two of you talked at the diner. And the way you ran back up to her house to give her that steamy kiss goodnight.”

“This guy was in the fuckin’ diner with us?” Derek asked rhetorically, his head swinging up to Trevor’s.

But Trevor didn’t respond. He couldn’t formulate a single word. All he could do was stand there in shock and watch.

“My Lisa had six days, but I’m an impatient bastard. In my last message, I told you sweet, little Alexis had six hours. That was almost two hours ago. Clock’s ticking, Soldier Boy. Think your girl can hold on for that long?” The video ended abruptly.

“No!” Trevor started to yell, forgetting this had been previously recorded and then sent to them. He didn’t want to even think about what she was going through now.

“I don’t get it. If you and Lisa were a thing...” Mac commented right as Jake walked back through the door. “Then, why is this guy acting like she was his?”

“Because she was,” Agent Ryker answered her.

Jake stopped when he saw the solemn expressions on everyone’s faces. “What happened?” Eric pulled him to the side to fill him in.

“What the hell do you mean, she washis?” Trevor turned to Ryker. “Lisa wasn’t involved with anyone while we were together. I never would’ve been with her otherwise.”

“They weren’t together while you were with her. It was before. Up until a month prior to joining your Delta Team unit overseas, Lisa Warren was engaged to this guy. Name’s Anthony Young. He was her partner, but got reassigned when they made their relationship public. Company policy.”

“Engaged?”

“I take it she didn’t tell you.”

Trevor shook his head. “No. I mean, it was casual. We both knew it wasn’t really going to end up going anywhere, but still. We talked about enough personal shit that I would have thought she’d share something like that with me.”

“Maybe she didn’t tell you because she knew this guy was a total whack job.”

Ryker looked at Mac. “You’re not far off, actually.”

“What do you mean?” Grant asked quietly.

“Long story short, Lisa broke things off because Young became too possessive. He started monitoring her cell records, who she spent time with after work, that sort of thing. According to a close agent friend”—Ryker looked directly at Trevor—“it was what drove her to volunteer for the mission with your team. Prior to that, she’d only been gathering intel from Hadim through a third party asset and satellite conference calls.”

Trevor ran a hand through his already disheveled hair. “Jesus.”

Mac’s voice got a little excited. “That means what happened to Lisa technically was this Tony guy’s fault.”

“It was Omar Hadim’s fault,” Ryker stated frankly. “His and the sick sonofabitch he worked for. Thankfully, that guy got what was coming to him years ago.”

“Why does Young keep calling Trevor ‘Soldier Boy’?”

“According to a coworker of his, that’s what Anthony always called Trevor when he spoke about him.”

“How the hell did he even know about Trev in the first place?” Coop asked as he returned from the kitchen.

“Apparently, Young went to college with Shane Billows.” Agent Ryker’s eyes slid to Trevor’s. “I guess they were pretty tight back in the day.”

His body and mind already on an emotional overload, Trevor didn’t even react to that bit of news.
