Without another word, he spun on his heels and flung open the sliding door leading to his private balcony. He then slammed it shut with such force, he was surprised the glass didn’t shatter.
Trevor walked over to the balcony’s railing and squeezed it between both fists. Despite his angry words just now, he locked his elbows and did his best to calm his racing heart. Inhaling through his nose, he blew out a slow, steady breath and tried to think of anything he’d missed. Something that would give a hint at who had taken Lexi.
Instead, he was flooded with images of her smiling face. He pictured her at the diner, smiling as she took someone’s order. He saw her laughing in his kitchen as he stole her bacon, then carried her into his room and made love to her that first time. Trevor pictured her beneath him...moaning and flushed with arousal. Lost in a passion unlike any he’d ever known.
He loved her. Right or wrong, too soon or not...Trevor loved her. And now she was gone, ripped from his hands before he ever got the chance to tell her.
Ah, God.Hanging his head between his shoulders, he squeezed his eyes shut. Two streaks of tears running down his face. He was still standing like that when he heard the door sliding open and then shutting from behind him.
Quickly, he wiped his face dry with his hands as Jake made his way over to him. Without a word, his friend walked up beside him with two open bottles of beer in his hands.
“We’re going to find her.”
Trevor could tell his friend wholeheartedly believed what he’d just said. Trevor wished he could be just as sure. He took the beer from Jake’s outstretched hand and tipped it against his lips. Trevor swallowed a big gulp of the ice cold liquid before speaking.
“How?” he asked almost emotionless. “We don’t know where he took her. We don’t know what kind of vehicle he was in. Hell, we don’t even know which direction they were headed after they left the diner.”
“I get that you’re frustrated, Trevor,” Jake’s low voice rumbled. “I really do.”
Trevor turned to Jake, trying hard to not sound like a total dick. “Do you? Because you were just inside that room telling me how I needed to calm down. How the fuck am I supposed to be calm knowing that asshole has her? When I have no idea what he’s doing to her?”
He didn’t wait for an answer. Instead, he turned back around and took another sip of beer as he looked out over the city. “She’s out there, Jake. She’s out there, and I don’t know how to help her.” He looked to his friend for guidance. “How did you do this?”
“Do what?”
“How did you not completely fall apart when Olivia was taken? It’s like...”—his breath heaved—“I feel like my heart’s being ripped from my chest and I can’t catch my breath. I can’t breathe, Jake.” He glanced at his friend, his voice breaking when he asked, “Why can’t I breathe?”
“Because you love her.”
More tears fell from the corners of his eyes. “I do.”
Jake lifted a corner of his mouth. “I know. So, you have to hang on to that. And to answer your question, I got through that time with Liv because I had you and the rest of the team to lean on. Just like you have us now. We’re here to help you, Trev. And we aren’t going to stop until we find Lexi and bring her home.”
Trevor used his free hand to wipe his eyes dry again. “There’s got to be something I’ve missed. I just don’t know what it is.”
The slider opened, and Derek poked his head outside. “Something just came through.” He looked at Trevor. “You’re gonna need to see this.”
