“What do you mean?”
“R.I.S.C.’s Alpha Team guys are all the same. They may have the hearts of saints, but they’re all a bunch of overprotective bulls when it comes to keeping their women safe. I don’t see Trevor letting anyone you don’t know getting within ten feet of you.”
Lexi started to deny the claim that she was Trevor’s woman, but Olivia wouldn’t let her.
“Don’t bother, sweetie. I saw the way he looked when he was talking to me about you before I came in here. Trust me. I know that man well, and if there’s one thing you can believe, it’s that his heart already belongs to you.”
Swallowing hard, Lexi blinked against the rush of emotions Olivia’s words brought forth. She knew how she felt about Trevor, but had been wondering if he felt the same. She prayed Olivia was right.
“Also, don’t be afraid to lean on Trevor...or me, for that matter...if you need us. Being attacked like that, twice, would make anyone nervous and jumpy. If you start to feel scared or overwhelmed, talk to Trev. He’s a great listener. Or, you can call me. I’ll use any excuse to go out for a good cup of coffee and some girl time.” Olivia smiled.
After talking for a few minutes longer, the two women had just started for the bedroom door when there was a quick knock and then it opened. Trevor peaked his head inside.
“You two doing okay?”
Olivia grinned over her shoulder at Lexi before reaching for the doorknob and opening it the rest of the way. “Yes, Trevor. I’m fine and so is your girl, here.”
“Yeah?” he asked, sounding genuinely relieved. He looked to Lexi.
“I told you before. I’m all right.”
His broad shoulders relaxed and he smiled that handsome smile. “Good.”
How can I be mad at him for caring so much?
Olivia looked at Trevor, then to Lexi, then back at Trevor. “All right, then. I’d say my job here is done.” She gave Lexi a hug, telling her Trevor had her number. Her new friend made her promise to call if she needed anything. Then, going to her tiptoes, she gave Trevor a kiss on the cheek and a hug.
“I’m glad you’re okay, too.”
“I’m fine, Liv. Thanks for coming by.”
“Anytime.”
“Your hubby’s waiting for you in the living room.”
Lexi couldn’t help but notice how Olivia’s smile grew from hearing that. The love she felt for Jake was inspiring.
Once those two were gone, it was just Trevor and Lexi, once again.
Trevor took a tentative step toward her. “I hope you aren’t too upset that she came over. I know I probably should have asked you first, but she called, and you were in the shower...”
“It’s fine, Trevor. Really.”
He didn’t come any closer, which she found disappointing. He’d been different with her since the attack. Distant.
Lexi moved closer to him. “Are you okay? You took the brunt of the fall.”
“I’m good. Just pissed that the guy got away.” He lifted his hand slowly, as if he were afraid to touch her. His fingertips lightly caressed the sore spot on her cheek. “Pissed that you were hurt again. I’m so sorry, Lex.”
“For what? You saved my life.”
“You were hurt because I wasn’t here to protect you. I should have been here, with you...not chasing some damn ghost—” He cut himself off, the look on his face telling her he’d almost said too much.
“You’re not the reason I was attacked, Trevor. You’re the reason I’m still alive. I don’t even want to think about what would have happened if you hadn’t shown up when you did.”
His eyes bore into hers. “There’s something else I want to talk about. I was going to wait, but after tonight, I realized I needed to say it...before I miss my chance.”
“Okay.” Lexi waited nervously. No good conversation ever started out that way.
