Lexi definitely didn’t like the sound of that. “What does that mean?” she whispered to Trevor.
He looked down at her, his expression fierce and dangerous. “It means I’m not letting you out of my site until the sonofabitch is caught.”
Chapter 10
––––––––
For the second timein just a few days, Lexi found herself in the comfort and protection of Trevor’s upscale apartment. Not because he’d simply wanted her there, but because someone had tried to hurt her. Possibly kill her.
As she stood beneath his shower’s hot, running water, she wondered how her life had taken such a turn. On one hand, she’d met Trevor. A man who, for all intents and purposes, was perfect. A man she was falling for much faster than she had the right to. On the other, it seemed as though Rob was more of a threat than she’d ever imagined.
Shivering, even though she was far from cold, Lexi was finishing rinsing her hair when Trevor’s voice traveled over the rush of the water.
“Lex?”
“Yeah?”
“You doing okay?”
Despite the night’s events, she smiled. “Yeah. I’m almost finished.”
“No rush, but I wanted to let you know, Jake’s here with his wife.”
That seemed odd. “Okay.”
“She’s a nurse, and she...she wanted to talk with you for a minute.”
Lexi rolled her lips inward. She’d already been checked out and cleared by the paramedics on the scene, and after the night she’d had, she really didn’t feel like being poked and prodded by another stranger.
She did her best not to sound irritated or ungrateful when she answered, “Okay. I’ll be right out.”
“Like I said, take your time.”
Lexi waited until she heard the click of the door latch before blowing out a frustrated breath, then immediately felt bad. She knew Trevor meant well and should be thankful he cared enough to have his nurse friend stop by.
By the time she dried off and had thrown on some sweats and a t-shirt, she felt slightly less irritated. Steam billowed out around her as she opened the door and stepped into Trevor’s bedroom. She jumped when someone knocked softly on the door.
