The man’s forearm was pressing against her throat, and it was clear she was struggling to breathe. She was doing her best to find purchase with her tiptoes, but the bastard was damn near holding her off the floor.

“Get your hands off her!” Trevor ordered as he moved farther into the room. Of course, it couldn’t be that easy.

Rather than respond with words, the other man simply held a struggling Lexi in place and stared. Trevor tried again.

“I said let her go.”

“T-Trev-or.”

Lexi’s broken voice was barely a whisper, but it still managed to reach his ears.

“I’m here, angel. I’m right here. Everything’s going to be okay.” To her attacker he warned, “I’m not going to tell you again. Let her go, or I will shoot you where you stand.”

Oddly, the man’s mouth slowly began to spread into a smile. Moving lightning-fast, he picked Lexi completely off her feet and threw her bodily toward Trevor.

His need to protect was instant and reactive. Dropping his gun, Trevor reached out for Lexi, his arms wrapping around her flailing body. He screamed her name as they both went flying backward...crashing right through the large, picture window he’d been standing in front of.

Chapter 9

––––––––

Trevor’s heart feltas though it would fly out of his chest when he lifted his head and saw Lexi’s motionless form in the grass a few feet away.

He scrambled across the short distance to where she lay. With heavy amounts of fear and adrenaline rushing through his veins, he didn’t even feel the bits of glass cutting into his palms and knees as he moved. She’s too still.

“Lexi!” he shouted as he reached her. She was on her left side, her hair blanketed across her face. “Alexis, look at me!”

She moaned, the sound bringing with it a wave of relief. “Baby, I need you to look at me. I need to know you’re okay.”

Another moan escaped her throat just before her eyes flew open with a gasp. She sat straight up and began fighting him.

“Lexi, stop! It’s me...Trevor. You’re okay, now. He’s gone, and you’re safe.”

Her muscles froze as his words sank in. “H-he’s gone? Are you sure?”

Unfortunately, he was. Trevor had seen the bastard running out the back just as they’d crashed through the glass.
