“He’s in the wind, Lex,” Derek offered.
“Meaning?”
“Meaning”—Trevor answered for Derek—“he’s putting a safe distance between himself and the DPD. His charges are non-extraditable, which means—”
“They won’t go across state lines to find him and bring him back.”
“Right,” Derek’s voice chimed in. “But, if he’s picked up for somethin’ else while he’s there, the California authorities will get ahold of the DPD. Between the two departments, they can decide whether or not to bring him back here or keep him locked up there.”
“Well, at least we know he’s far away from here, I guess.”
“That, he is. And I don’t foresee him comin’ back to Texas any time soon. I’d say you’re safe, darlin’.”
Lexi sighed in relief. She’d love to stay another night with Trevor, but knowing Rob wasn’t coming after her took a huge weight from her shoulders.
“That’s good news, D. Keep watching him, just in case."
“I’d planned to. And Lex?”
“Yeah?”
“I mean what I said. My door will always open for you, sugar.”
Sounding serious, Trevor said, “I’m hanging up now.”
Lexi chuckled. “Bye, Derek.” She barely got the words out before Trevor tapped his screen again and tossed the phone onto the mattress beside her.
“Now, where were we?”
He started to open the condom wrapper again, but again, his phone began to ring. It was a different ringtone, this time.
Clearly frustrated, Trevor cursed under his breath. With that same look of regret he’d gotten when Derek called, he said, “I’m sorry. That’s Jake. He’s my boss. He’s on his honeymoon, so if he’s calling me now, it must be for a good reason.”
For some reason, Lexi found both his frustration and his need to explain adorable. “It’s seriously fine, Trevor.”
He grinned, then answered with, “Aren’t you supposed to be enjoying that new wife of yours?” Trevor paused to listen to his boss. His brows turned in. “Now? I just checked in with Ryker this morning. He told me there weren’t any active jobs on the books for us.”
Suddenly, every muscle in his body became tense as Trevor’s entire demeanor changed. He gave her a quick glance before asking the man on the phone, “Are you sure?”
Trevor waited, listening to the other man’s response before he made his way to his clothes. Using his shoulder to hold the phone to his ear, he continued to talk in short, vague phrases while he swiftly put his clothes back on.
Something was clearly wrong. Not wanting to appear as though she were trying to eavesdrop, Lexi gathered the sheet around her and got out of bed. Grabbing her panties from the floor, she went to the kitchen to retrieve the shirt she’d been wearing earlier.
Trevor was so distracted by whatever his boss was telling him, she didn’t think he even noticed when she’d stepped out of the room.
Feeling a bit awkward, she dropped the sheet onto the floor near the island and put Trevor’s T-shirt back on. By the time she walked back into his bedroom, Trevor was off the phone and fully dressed.
Checking the contents a black duffle bag he’d placed on the mattress, his head swiveled to face her. “I’m sorry, Lexi, but I have to go.”
She walked over to his dresser where she picked up the pair of sweats she’d neatly folded and placed there the night before.
“Is everything okay?”
He gave her a tight smile. “Everything’s fine. It’s just work.”
His words told her one thing, but the tone of his voice and the haunted look in his eyes said differently.
“I don’t know how long I’ll be gone.” He continued to look through his bag. “I’d really like to take you out when I get back.” Trevor gave her a tiny smirk. “A real date, this time.”
