Trevor growled in appreciation, but then ended the kiss as quickly as he’d started it. With his hand still holding the back of her head and his other arm wrapped loosely around her waist, he rested his forehead against hers.

“That”—he spoke between heaving breaths—“should’ve been our first kiss.”

“I forgive you,” Lexi whispered teasingly.

His warm breath hit her chin when he exhaled on a silent laugh. “You’re constantly surprising me.”

Right back at ya, soldier.

Lexi wanted to say the words, but she was still having a hard time catching her breath.

“I’ve wanted to kiss you like that since I first saw you,” he said with a low rumble.

All she managed to say was, “Same.”

“I want to kiss you again.”

“Okay.” Lexi nodded shamelessly, uncaring of how quickly she’d agreed.

His smile widened with appreciation. “Okay.”

Trevor kept the pace slow this time. Sensual. It was even more arousing than the first, which was something Lexi wouldn’t have thought possible.

Once again, when he pulled his lips away, Trevor leaned his forehead against hers. “I need to go.”

Lexi had never had a one-night stand before. She didn’t judge those who did, but for her, the idea had always seemed wrong.

Standing here now, however...wrapped in Trevor’s arms...she was seriously considering inviting him in.

“Why?” The question was out before she could stop it.

Trevor gave her a low chuckle before taking in a deep breath and letting it out slowly. “I think you know what’ll happen if I don’t.”

And that’s a problem because...

As if he could read her mind, he cupped one side of her face and said, “I don’t want to push things too far, too fast.”

Okay, there seriously had to be something wrong with this guy. Some major flaw he was hiding. No man was that considerate. At least none she’d ever met.

Especially not one as devastatingly handsome as Trevor Matthews.

Again, he seemed to know exactly what she was thinking. Brushing a wayward curl from her eye, he explained.

“I know we barely know each other, but...I like you, Alexis. A lot.” He leaned in and gave her a sweet, chaste kiss before whispering, “I don’t want to be something you regret in the morning.”

From the way he kissed and the impressive erection she’d felt against her belly just a few minutes before, Lexi had a feeling she wouldn’t regret a damn thing. Still, she couldn’t help but appreciate his way of thinking.

“Okay. And, for the record”—because she needed him to know— “I like you, too.”

His dark eyes lit up with the tilt of his lips. “Good. Now, I really do have to go before I do something lame, like invite myself in for a cup of coffee or something.”

Lexi laughed. “Well, you’d be out of luck, anyway. I don’t have any coffee.”

“No?”

“Nope. It’s been a while since I’ve gone grocery shopping. I’m at the diner most days, and I guess I figure eating there with other people is less depressing than eating here alone after work.”

Trevor gently caressed her bottom lip with his thumb. “Maybe we can do something to change that. You eating here alone, that is.”
