Leaning down several inches, Trevor brought his lips closer to hers. He knew Lexi was on board when she stood on her tiptoes to help close the space between them. His lips had barely brushed against hers when someone started pounding loudly on the diner’s door.
Startled, Lexi jumped back, and Trevor’s hand instinctively went to his waistband at his lower back. Remembering he’d opted for his boot holster —to keep from freaking Lexi out—he bent down and pulled his pant leg up.
Releasing the gun from its sheath, Trevor stood to find Lexi cautiously eyeing the weapon.
“Sorry, angel. I never go anywhere without it.”
“O-occupational hazard.” She swallowed. “No, I get it. But do you really think it’s needed now?” She sounded a little shaky, but otherwise fine.
Trevor glanced down at his watch. “It’s too late for someone to just show up here. Especially since the diner’s hours are clearly posted on the door.” Plus, the only lights they’d left on were the ones in the kitchen.
“Seems pretty silly to knock on a door if you’re planning to rob the place.”
She wasn’t wrong.
“It’s probably nothing,” he assured her. “But people had been known to knock or ring a doorbell before breaking into a place, just to make sure it’s actually empty.”
More pounding came then.
“What about our cars?” Lexi whispered, as if whoever was out there could hear her. “Surely, they saw those.”
“We could’ve met up with friends and left our cars here.”
Every question she’d asked was valid, and since they weren’t in any immediate danger, he wasn’t upset at her for taking the time to ask. Truth be told, he was impressed with the way she was calmly thinking the situation through.
But right now, he needed to see who was outside and make sure she wasn’t in any actual danger.
“Stay here,” he ordered quietly. Thankfully, she did as she was told.
Slowly, Trevor walked toward the swinging doors. With his free hand, he pushed the left one open just enough to be able to see the man standing outside the diner’s front door...and the flashing yellow lights on the large truck parked behind him.
Relaxing his shoulders, he turned to Lexi with a smirk. “You forget to cancel the tow service?”
