“You do?”

Trevor hated that she’d doubted that for even a second. “I wouldn’t have said it if I didn’t mean it, Lex. I’ve only held back because I wasn’t sure howyoufelt.” He used a finger to swipe some hair from her forehead and tuck it behind her ear. “After everything you went through, I was afraid you’d hate me forever. Not that I’d blame you.”

With her good hand, Lexi grabbed hold of his raised wrist. “I could never hate you, Trevor. I love you.” She leaned up and kissed him this time.

Trevor allowed himself a moment to give in to his need for this woman. The tip of his tongue hit the seam of her lips, and she opened for him for the first time since their nightmare had ended.

He poured all the love he felt for this woman into that one, slow kiss. After a few glorious moments, he pulled away and whispered, “I love you, too, angel.” Surprisingly, Lexi’s shoulders shook with a light chuckle.

“Not exactly the reaction I was expecting.”

“I’m sorry.” She gave him another short, sweet kiss. “I was just thinking about how right Olivia was.”

“About what?”

“She said you and I really needed to talk to each other. That it would probably help us a lot. Guess she was right.”

Trevor smiled. “The woman usually is. And speaking of talking...” He sat up a little straighter. “There’s something else I wanted to discuss.”

“Okay.” Lexi sat back and grabbed a blueberry from the plate. Popping it into her mouth, she said, “What is it?”

“The diner.”

Confused, Lexi said, “There is no diner.”

“No, but there’s still the land the diner used to sit on.”

“I don’t understand.”

“Here.” He leaned up and pulled an envelope from his back pocket. “Maybe this will help.”

Lexi took the envelope from his hand and opened it awkwardly. Once she got the papers out, she unfolded it and began to read.

“I don’t understand,” she repeated. “This looks like a property deed.”

“That’s because it is. It’s the deed to the piece of land Joe’s Diner was on.”

She looked up at him, her cute as hell brows wrinkling together just above her nose. “Why do you have the deed to Joe’s land?”

“Because it’s not Joe’s land anymore.” He looked her and smiled. “It’s yours.”

Stunned and still clearly confused, Lexi opened her mouth—probably to tell him for the third time that she didn’t understand—but Trevor cut her off at the pass.

“I went to visit Joe in his room last night while you were sleeping. He gave me that”—Trevor tilted his head toward the papers in her hand—“and said he wanted you to have the land.”

“Why in the world would Joe give me the diner’s land?”

“So you can have a place to build your own restaurant.”

Her adorable eyes grew as big as saucers. “My own...Trevor, I can’t build a restaurant. Even with this land, I’d still have to find the money for the construction, plus all the licensing fees that would go with it. This was sweet of Joe”—Lexi folded the papers back up and started to put them into the envelope—“but there’s no way I can afford to do all that.”

“Yes, you can.”

“How?”

“With my help.”

“I can’t ask you to—”
