Concerned, he looked at the door to Lexi’s room and asked, “What’s wrong. Is she...”

“She’s fine, Trevor. Actually, that’s what I wanted to tell you.”

“That she’s fine?”

Olivia grabbed Trevor’s hand. “That woman in there is a lot stronger than you think. And, despite what’s probably going around in that head of yours, Lexi doesn’t blame you for what happened.”

“She...she said that?”

“Yes.” Olivia smiled up at him. “Trevor, she knows it wasn’t your fault. We all do. You’re the only one still hanging on to that guilt. I know what that did to you after Lisa. You have a second chance at happiness, and she’s waiting for you right there, behind that door. You can either waste another nine years blaming yourself for what happened to Lexi, or you can spend the rest of your life being happy with the woman you love.”

Standing on her tip-toes, Olivia leaned up and gave him a kiss on his cheek. “Be happy, Trevor. You deserve it.” Then, she stepped around him and began to walk away.

She’d made it half way down the hall when Trevor turned and hollered for her to stop. Thanks to his long legs, it didn’t take long for him to make his way over to her.

“Do you still have the stuff at the ranch I asked you to get the other night?”

“For your date?”

“Yeah.”

Olivia smiled knowingly. “Yes. Would you like for me to call Jake and have him get everything set up?”

Trevor nodded. “I’d appreciate it.”

Pulling out her phone, Olivia said, “I’ll call him right now.”

“Thank you.” Trevor leaned down and gave his friend a peck on the top of the head before turning back and walking to Lexi’s room.

Almost an hour later, they were pulling into Jake’s driveway.

“It’s beautiful.” Lexi sounded wistful as she stared out at the expansive green hills and trees. “This is all Jake’s?”

“Yep. And Olivia’s, of course.” Trevor put the truck in park and turned off the ignition. “Wait here. I’ll come around to help.”

Before she could argue, he got out and walked around to the passenger door. Opening it up, he held his hand out for her.

“Thank you.”

He looked down at her and smiled. “Of course.”

Lexi drew in a deep breath of the clean, country air. “Olivia’s so lucky to live here.” She glanced down toward Jake’s barn, and her eyes lit up. “They have horses?”

Trevor smiled. “You ride?”

“No, but I’ve always wanted to.”

“Okay.”

“Okay?”

“Sure. You get yourself healed, and I’ll take you riding.”

Lexi smiled, but the spark in her eyes dulled slightly. “Trevor, what...what are we doing here? I thought when we left the hospital, you were just going to take me home. To my house. Or”—she hesitated slightly—“I thought we might go to your place so we could talk. So, why are we here?”

“I still owe you a date,” he said matter-of-factly.

“A date? Now?” She looked at him like he was crazy.
