Jordon blinked her eyes open, shut off her alarm and smiled as she remembered the night before. She flung the blanket back and got out of bed.She needed to get her chores done so she could go into town and see Spider.

After gathering clothes for the day, she headed for the bathroom, grabbing her phone on her way out the door.

Chapter Thirteen

Spider pushed the tableaway so it would be harder to reach anything on it.He was in the mood to start throwing shit and the last thing he wanted to do was lose control and scare one of the nurses who had worked so hard to get him this far.He knew his disappointment wasn’t their fault and he didn’t want to take it out on them. So, he clenched his teeth and tilted his head back while he forced himself to take deep, slow breaths.

“I’m sorry, man.I know you were wanting to get out of here. But the upside is hopefully tomorrow.Let me call in the nurse to start that infusion.I have faith that will take care of things, and I’ll be able to get you to the house tomorrow,” Fletch said from the sofa.

Spider didn’t turn to look at him.Instead, he closed his eyes and continued to focus on his breathing while he counted.First to ten, then twenty.By then he’d calmed down enough he wouldn’t totally lose his shit.He lifted his head and turned to look at his best friend.

“All right.Go ahead and call her.We might as well get this started.”He waited until Fletch stood and headed from the room before he let his head fall forward. He’d wanted somewhere other than this fucking uncomfortable bed to sleep tonight. He’d hoped to have a real bed, somewhere he could lay on a flat surface or mostly flat.Instead of the contoured and sectional bed in this place. He thought that would help his sleeping.Or maybe it would be that there was no one coming in every couple of hours to check on him.Yeah, that would be a big help.

“Hey,” Jordon’s voice came from near the door, surprising him.“You look like someone just wrecked your bike and told you you’d never ride again.”

He didn’t lift his head, but he heard her moving closer. He let out a dry chuckle.

“Like that hasn’t already happened.”

“Only half of it.I thought we’d convinced you of that. You’ll never get there if you don’t know you will. It’s your determination, your strength that will get you there.”She moved close enough to lay a hand on his arm.

He took a deep breath and held it for a moment then forced all his disappointment, all his anger to leave with the air as he pushed it out of his lungs.Jordon was the last one he wanted to blast with all of his anger. She would likely turn on her heel and walk out, and right now he couldn’t chase her and that would make him feel even worse.

“I do believe it.I’m just having a bit of a pity party.I thought I was getting out of here today.”

“I know. It’s disappointing.I had plans for you once you were out of here.”She sounded almost as disappointed as he felt.He tilted his head as he watched her for a moment.

“What plans?”

“Nope,” she said, shaking her head.“That will stay a surprise. You’re not getting sprung today doesn’t cancel them, just postpones them.”She lifted her brows and let them fall as she gave him a teasing smile.

Angie, the nurse that had been here when he’d arrived, came in, a couple of IV bags in one arm and a small plastic toolbox in the other.

“All right,” Angie said as she moved closer to the bed, coming around the side where Jordon wasn’t standing.“I hear you’re ready to start your meds?”

Spider nodded and moved his arm so she could get to the veins to start the IV.
