My jaw drops and Switch squeaks. Or maybe that was me. I can't tell. I also can’t figure out why Switch and Willa seem to be completely calm about the situation.
“You got any more of those guns?” Switch asks, eyes darting between the shotgun in Willa’s hand and my house. My wonderful little house.
Willa’s eyes narrow and she purses her lips. “Think you can handle Dean?” Switch’s brows raise as he nods. “Alright then. You take Dean, I’ll keep Sam.”
I can’t help the giggle that bursts out of me and when Switch looks baffled. “It’s the Winchester brothers, from Supernatural.” I explain. I'm verging on hysterical and I have no way of stopping myself from giggling.
Trying to take deep breaths, I focus on slowing my heart rate down. I need to calm down, I need to curl into a little ball like I’ve done so many times before and just go into my turtle shell. Play dead, just, survive, but I can’t. I’m stuck, lightheaded like I’m floating away without a tether.
“I’ve got you, Joy,” Switch murmurs, his big hand rubbing down my hair, my neck, and back again.
“We’vegot you.” Willa adds, eyes narrowed at my house. “Let's teach those motherfuckers a lesson.”
“Willa, is there something you need to tell me?” Switch asks, warily.
“Yeah, never call me a bitch,” she says through gritted teeth before turning on her heel and walking toward my house.
Switch opens his mouth before looking at me, not just seeing me, but lookingintome. “I’ll keep you safe, Joy. No matter what.”
“I don’t want you to get hurt on my account.”
He looks toward my house and Willa’s retreating back before looking back at me, eyes dancing. “I have a feeling Willa is going to be more dangerous than all those fuckers in your house put together.” I grin at him and then cock my head when motorcycle pipes fill the air. “Stay here, I’ll be back.”
Switch presses a kiss to the crown of my head and even though I’m huddled in the front seat of the DRMC SUV, even though my house is being invaded by dangerous men, even though myneighbor and the DRMC are going in to bat for me, heat spreads through me and my heart takes flight.
Everything is going to be alright.
Chapter 7
Switch
Imake my way to Joy’s front door knowing that before long my brothers will have my back. Not that I think I need it when my eyes land on Willa, shotgun in hand as she points it to one sorry looking motherfucker.
“Ah, Willa, did you do that to him?” I stare at the swelling on the left side of the guy’s face.
“Did I hit him with the butt of my shotgun and loosen two teeth you mean?” She grins as she keeps her aim steady on him, one cowboy booted foot resting on Joy’s coffee table.
“Hey man - whoa, who’s this?” Rider asks, staring at Willa.
“Rider, Willa. Willa, Rider. Joy’s neighbor.” I tip my head between the two of them.
“Well, remind me never to piss you off.” Rider mutters, before his gaze moves up the stairwell. “Cleared up there?”
“Not yet. Just got here to find Willa and this fuck knuckle.” I settle my attention back on WIlla, “Anyone else in here?”
“I saw three come in. Got this guy but you’d think the other two would have come out of the woodwork by now.” She shrugs, almost looking bored.
Rider nods once then takes off upstairs, gun drawn. The rest of my brothers start filing in, all of them giving Willa confused looks. Well all of them except Mad Dog.
“Ah, sweetheart, what the fuck are you doin’?” Mad Dog asks, approaching Willa like she’s a wild animal.
“Sweetheart?” Rhodie mumbles as he and Marx stare between their father and Willa.
“Just mindin’ my own business, darlin’. Nothing to worry about,” Willa replies with a megawatt smile.
Banging from upstairs draws our attention along with Rider’s howl and I take the stairs two at a time to get to my brother. Rider may be a pain in the ass, but he'sourpain in the ass.
“Rider!” Rhodie yells as he follows close behind, the only reply is more howling and banging.
