“I want to kiss you.” Gunner whispered.
I inhaled sharply.
A grin tugged at the corners of his lips. He ran a hand down the side of my face.
My heart pounded in my ears, my blood roaring like thunderous waves, drowning everything around us out.
His lips grazed mine.
It’s happening…it’s really happening…
“Rae! There you are!” Kendra, another waitress, voice broke through and I jumped backwards, quickly spinning around and wiping my sweaty palms on my pants. She looked around me, her mouth forming a small o-shape at the sight of Gunner. “Hi G. Didn’t see you back there?”
G? What are they on nickname terms now?
The ping of jealously hit me out of nowhere and I didn’t like it. Not even a bit.
Knock it off, stupid heart and brain. I barely knew the guy.
“Sorry, I’ll get out of the way.” Gunner said as he slipped out behind Kendra and disappeared.
“Hey Kendra, I’ll be out in a second. I’m running more late than usual.” I said as I opened my locker and grabbed my apron.
“No worries. One of your regulars is looking for you and he won’t stop asking.”
I groaned. “Ugh. It’s like we become their makeshift wives or something.”
“Tell me about it.” Kendra said before walking away.
I tied my apron behind my back.
Well, so much for ignoring Gunner.
It was looking damn near impossible.
All of my plans sucked.
CHAPTER FIVE
Gunner
I fucked up.
I got too close.
But fuck, I couldn’t ignore the feelings in that moment. The desire outweighed it all.
Since our almost kiss, I kept out of her way for the rest of the night. But that didn’t mean I didn’t sneak glances at her all night. Or watch how friendly she was, how good she was with the customers, how she didn’t have to write orders on a pad of paper and memorized them instead.
As the night wore on, the customers slowly left along with a couple of servers and a bartender, leaving only Raemina, me, and Jack, another bartender.
After Jack served the final customer, I told him I’d close the bar down, something Grizz showed me last week.
Was it a good idea for Raemina and me to be alone? Probably not. But it was happening anyway.
The last customer left, and I locked the door. Raemina wiped down tables while I wiped down the bar and restocked for the next day.
“Is everyone gone?” She asked as she walked over to the bar and hopped onto a bar stool.
