“That’s not what I had in mind. You’ll have shares, and if you do a good job as a manager and everyone else does a good job, the value of your shares will increase. That’s how you’ll make money.”

“Hmm,” I mutter again. “Is that all?”

He nods curtly. “Yes, that’s all. And I want it all.”

“Yes.”

His mouth opens but no sound comes out.

Smiling at his confusion, I take a step toward him. “I’ll marry you.”

“Margot, my love—”

“But I have two conditions!”

A hint of amusement touches his lips. “Of course, you do. What are they?”

“Number one, we’ll set the date at least six months out to give us—all three of us—time to adjust.”

“Done,” he says.

“Number two, if I feel I’m not good enough at managing the studio, or that it needs a manager who’s there all the time and not some of the time, then I’ll resign.”

“And go back to acting?” he asks.

“Maybe or find another job. Also, if you feel I’m not good enough, you’ll fire me. Promise you’ll give me no special treatment!”

“I can’t make that promise.” To my quizzical glance, he explains, “I intend to give you plenty of special treatment, in all sorts of places and locations.”

“No special treatment at the studio,” I specify.

“That, I can promise.”

“Then we’re cool.” I hold out a hand. “Let’s shake on it!”

We do.

Still holding my hand, he grips my waist with his other hand. “A handshake seems a little inadequate, given the life-changing nature of our decision.”

I train my eyes on his lips.

But instead of kissing me, he pulls the door shut, turns the key, and begins to walk me backward. I look over my shoulder. He’s aiming for the armchair by the wall. When we reach it, he pivots and lowers us into the armchair.

I find myself straddling him with my center against his already hard ridge.

“Might I make a suggestion?” His large hands settle on my hips.

I clutch his strong neck. “You may.”

“I propose we shake more than hands on it.” His grip on me tightens. “Would my future countess find that agreeable?”

I murmur in his ear, “She would like that very much, my lord!”
