I blink and refocus so I can take in his handsome face without it blurring. Earnest and pleading, he seems so clueless. Like he really doesn’t know… I watch a droplet of water fall from his hair and slide its way down his cheek, careening left toward his lips. “Why did you ghost me?”
“I had a family emergency to deal with,” Billy replies, his voice low and heavy. I feel it between my legs, and it’s doing nothing to stop my nipples from standing at attention.
“I need more than that,” I reply, my voice way more breathy than I would like.
“I know exactly what you need,” Billy counters, and his hand moves under the water’s surface, moving toward my breasts. His fingertips graze the front of my bikini top but I grab his wrist and yank it away. The slight touch he managed is like a lick of flames against my skin.
His arm goes limp and would have dropped to his side if my hand wasn’t still circling his wrist. “My mother was obviously a wreck after Tommy died. At that point, she didn’t yet realize her marriage was a sham. She was a regular grieving widow, if there is such a thing. But then…”
I wait. He says nothing for so long my heart starts to sink. He’s not going to tell me. He’s not going to let me in on the truth so this isn’t happening. I let go of his wrist.
He grabs mine before I can turn for the stairs.
