"I promise to be your partner in everything,"he'd said, his voice rough with emotion."To share the weight of whatever life brings us. To love and protect you fiercely for all the days of our lives."
She'd kept her own vows simple but no less meaningful."I promise to trust you with my heart, to stand beside you as an equal, and to never stop fighting for us."
The memory warmed her even now as she glanced over at her husband. His strong hands gripped the steering wheel with that characteristic control, the sleeves of his navy button-down rolled up, revealing the edge of the tiger tattoo that wrapped around his right bicep.
They'd chosen the location for their new gym perfectly. Close enough to the pride estate that was now her permanent home that they could easily manage both responsibilities, but still accessible to the city where her mother lived and her former students could find them. It was another example of how Adrian saw the bigger picture, how he understood that strength came from balance.
Partnership.
That's what they'd built. She'd been terrified three months ago that accepting his help would mean losing herself, becoming some pampered mate who let her husband handle everything. Instead, she'd discovered that sharing the load made her stronger, not weaker. His business acumen combined with her vision and training expertise had created something neither could have achieved alone.
But today, nerves fluttered in her stomach like trapped butterflies. Not just the usual pre-event jitters, though the grand opening was certainly significant. This was different. More personal. More life-changing.
Her right hand drifted unconsciously to her still-flat abdomen, where their future was growing in secret.
"Your nerves are spiking like crazy today," Adrian said, his voice cutting through her thoughts. His blue eyes flicked toward her before returning to the road. "Are you that excited for the grand opening?"
Riley's breath caught. The mate bond meant she couldn't hide much from him, but she'd been working hard to keep this particular secret until the right moment. Apparently, her body had other plans.
"Yes," she said carefully. "But there's something else I'm excited about too."
Adrian's hands tightened slightly on the steering wheel, his alpha instincts picking up on the shift in her tone. "What's that?"
Riley took a breath, her heart hammering. "I'm pregnant."
The truck swerved slightly as Adrian's whole body went rigid. She felt the shock hit him through their bond like a lightning strike, followed immediately by an explosion of pure joy so intense it made her gasp.
"Riley—" He yanked the wheel hard right, pulling off onto the gravel shoulder. The truck came to an abrupt stop, dust swirling around them.
He turned toward her, his blue eyes blazing with those golden flecks. "We're having a baby?"
"Yes." The word came out breathless, excitement and love pouring through their connection in waves. "I confirmed it yesterday with the doctor."
For a moment, Adrian just stared at her, his expression cycling through wonder, fierce protectiveness, andoverwhelming happiness. Then he was reaching for her, his large hands framing her face with infinite gentleness.
"That's the best news," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "Riley, that's?—"
He kissed her then, deep and claiming, pouring all his love and excitement into the connection between their lips. She could taste his joy, feel his tiger practically purring with satisfaction at having his mate carrying his child. When they finally broke apart, both breathing hard, his forehead rested against hers.
"Our baby," he murmured, as if testing how the words felt. "Our child is going to be perfect."
Riley laughed, the sound bubbling up from pure happiness. "We better get going, or we'll be late to our own grand opening."
Adrian's grin was brilliant as he pressed one more quick kiss to her lips before reluctantly pulling back. "Right. Can't have the owners missing their own party."
He pulled the truck back onto the road, but Riley could feel his excitement humming through their bond like an electrical current. His free hand found hers, their fingers interlacing as he drove, and she smiled as they made their way toward their new gym.
The truck's engine finally rumbled to a stop as Adrian maneuvered into the owner's parking spot, the fresh asphalt still gleaming under the late morning sun. Riley's breath caught as she took in the sight of their new gym standing proud and modern against the backdrop of the bustling commercial district they'd chosen. The building commanded attention without being ostentatious, its clean lines and floor-to-ceiling windows promising transparency and strength in equal measure.
This is really happening.
Three months ago, she'd been drowning in debt, patching equipment with duct tape, and wondering if she'd have to close her doors. Now she was looking at a two-story testament towhat partnership could achieve when two people refused to compromise their individual strengths.
"You're practically vibrating with excitement now," Adrian said, his voice carrying that low rumble that still made her stomach flutter. "And pride. So much pride it's making my tiger purr."
Riley grinned, unable to contain the joy bubbling up inside her. "I can't wait to start teaching again." Her hand drifted unconsciously to her knee, which had healed almost fully but not quite. "And I'm excited about the pride members who've already signed up. They're so eager to learn from their Alpha's mate."
The title still felt new on her tongue, but it fit like a perfectly tailored glove. She'd discovered that being Adrian's partner—in every sense—hadn't diminished her independence. Instead, it had amplified her ability to help others find their own strength.
