I really wished I had a country I could gift her with because at this moment she had all the grace, beauty, and backbone of one hell of fierce Queen.Maybe I could make a loyalty pledge to her instead of proposing…I heard a faint murmuring through the crowd, pulling me out of my musings. All I could focus on was her majesty, as she glided up to the witness stand. She had to be an actual Queen, at some point in her lineage. She got up on the stand, raised her right hand, placing her left on the bible the bailiff was holding out to her.

“Do you swear to the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?”

“Yes, your honor.” She kept her gaze forward on the back wall.

Oh, my thought drew out, my nostrils flared thinking, this is how she’s going to play it.

I wanted to clap my hands together like a giddy schoolboy who’d just been told that his bully was about to get the ass beating of his life. I was so excited to watch this. She looked fierce and tired of their shit.

Fuck she was sexy.

I’d need something to put in my lap to hide the chub I just got from watching her exude that kind of power and grace.

Chapter Twenty-Nine:

Devin’s POV

I walked in, pep talking myself in my head.

You’re a Queen. You just have to tell the truth. They aren’t worth acknowledgement.

“Ms. Murphy, were you married to Mr. Caleb Dennison?” His lawyer started, smirking, looking like a wolf staring at prey. He was walking slowly up towards the witness stand, hands clasped behind his back. I think he was going forthoughtful, but all I could see was a look for someone who had underestimated the woman sitting across from him. I kept my face neutral, giving him nothing to work with.

Facts only, fucker.

“Yes,” I said, in the most bored tone I could muster, acting like I wanted to get this over with already. I let my eyes dance across the sea of people in the seats, I looked at countless faces and wanted to scream inside. My in-laws and his extended family were here.

Why? Why did all of these people have to be here for this?! It’s fucking embarrassing!Just as I was about to focus back on the lawyer, feeling his presence leaning on the witness stand, I saw him.

Cash.

My Johnny. He came. How did he even know?I swear there were butterflies doing things to my stomach, and I had to work harder to school my features.

“How long were you married in total Ms. Murphy?” His question pulled me back into the moment. I looked back at the sleaze leering at me, allowing me to come back to reality, to why I was here.

“Six months before separating. Eight months total until the divorce papers were signed and submitted.” I gave a tight smile as I focused on this lawyer, trying, and probably failing, to keep my face from showing my disdain for the man. He gave a quick smile before stepping back and pacing the length of the room in front of me, arms behind his back again.

“And. In those eight months, did youeversuspect your husband of cheating?” His voice was going for, “There’s no possible way, right?” Such leading questions.

I looked at the dumbass attorney, where was he going with this line of questioning, I had no idea, but if he thought this would win it for him, then I’d answer. He’d only wanted my honesty after all.

“Yes,” I leaned forward to say clearly into the microphone, looking my ex in the eyes as he shrunk, sitting in the seat right behind the table with his lawyer's papers spread across it. His lawyer cleared his throat, attempting a different line of questioning.

“Do you know the defendant?” His eyes were focused on mine now, ready for another ‘surprise’.

“Yes.” Even more ready to be done and off the stand.

“Can you tell us how?”

I clicked my tongue, trying not to roll my eyes. I made eye contact with Caleb again. I wanted him to know I’ve known since it happened.

“She’s one of his coworkers, Becky. I caught her fucking my husband right after dinner at their office Christmas party. I left shortly after, feeling rather nauseous.” I kept my voice even, eyes locked with his as I delivered yet another blow he didn’t know was coming. Caleb visibly paled. I knew he knew that I’d left the party because I was ill. And now he knew it was really because I had caught them going at it like fucking animals. And now he got to sit with the knowledge that we both knew what he was likely up to when he didn’t return home until I was already at the hospital.

Disgusting. That is all he is.

“Wow. That, um,” the lawyer scratched his head, striding back over to his table to look at his notes. “I’m so sorry you…had to…witness that. Did you ever suspect him before that night though?”

His question came out rushed as he sifted through papers, probably attempting to get this case to go in his direction.
