“Hello?”
“Alex? It’s Johnny. Do you have a minute?”
“Sure. What’s up?”
“I fucked up with Becca.”
“I was wondering what was going on yesterday. She didn’t want to talk about it.”
“Fuck. I was hoping you could tell me what I did. But if she didn’t tell you then I’m fucked.”
“Did she say anything at all?”
“Nothing helpful. She said that I didn’t do anything wrong.”
“That’s it?”
“Then she said that she wouldn’t settle for someone who agrees with her mother.”
“You agree with her mother?”Alex yells so loudly I need to hold the phone away from my ear.“What the fuck is wrong with you?”
Okay, now I’m really confused. Why wouldn’t Becca’s best friend agree that I’m not nearly good enough for her.
“She told me that we’re not on the same level, and I agree. Becca is way too good for me. I’m lucky she looked at me twice.”
Alex laughed into the phone, but there was no humour in it.
“You…you… Are you a fucking idiot?”She continues to laugh.
“Hey now, there’s no need for name calling. But yeah, I’m probably an idiot if you’re asking me like that. What did I do?”
“Her mother doesn’t think you’re not good enough for Becca. She thinks Becca isn’t good enough for you.”
