Saylor looked up with a tentative smile. “I was just thinking the same thing. And I don’t have anything suitable for a funeral. I’ll have to go shopping.”
“I’ll have Naomi set up some appointments.”
She winced. “I’d rather go with Judy and handle all the details myself, if that’s all right with you.”
“Whatever you want, baby. I do want you to think of this as your home and settle in—unpack.”
She opened her mouth like she wanted to object. But then she didn’t.
Instead, she openedthebag in front of her.
Her whole body flushed as a dildo I’d missed the first time tumbled out. She grabbed it and shoved it back into the bag then grabbed her toiletry kit and quickly closed the lid on the suitcase. “I’m just gonna go brush my teeth.”
Saylor galloped out of the room like hellhounds were nipping at her heels.
I shook my head. Given how things had gone in Fiji, I would’ve thought we were beyond all that timidness.
Or maybe it was an indictment on my dickishness.
Shit.
I slowly followed her to the bathroom and stood in the open doorway. Her face was still flushed, and she avoided my eyes as she stared at her reflection and brushed her teeth with alacrity.
Yup, this was definitely because of my dickishness.
I didn’t know what to do or to say to begin to make up the past two days to Saylor. I didn’t want her to leave, but I also didn’t know how to make her want to stay.
Sighing, I entered the bathroom and grabbed my toothbrush and brushed my teeth at the sink next to her.
Saylor kept shooting me looks out of the corner of her eye but didn’t say anything. Although fair, given she had a toothbrush in her mouth.
I smiled around my own toothbrush at my absurdity.
“What?” Saylor’s question was muffled.
I shrugged and shook my head.
After she rinsed, she rested her hip against the counter and watched me. “So what’s the plan for tomorrow?”
I spit in the sink and rinsed my mouth. “I guess Ryker and I will head over to the funeral home to make all the arrangements. You and Ma can go shopping if you’d like. I’m sure there’s lots of stuff you’ll need to make this your home.”
“Okay.” Saylor bit her bottom lip and nodded slowly. “I can do that.”
“I’ll leave the Benz for you. I want to arrange for a driver too.”
Saylor shrugged. “I think an Uber would be easier.”
“Yeah no. After that scene at the airport, I think I’d feel better if you had a driver or security with you.”
“Oh. Right.” She gave me an uneasy look. “Whatever you think is best.”
“I’ll arrange it myself.”
“Oh. I—”
“It probably wasn’t the best time to give my assistant a few days off. So I’ll make the arrangements myself because your safety is important to me.”
Her mouth closed with a click of her teeth and a warm expression came into her eyes.
