Chapter Forty
Kay
“Your numbers are great, Mr. Stevens.”
Dr. Derik Stevens was here for Collin’s last post-op check before he would be released from the hospital.
He explained to him he wanted Collin to continue seeing a cardiologist every six months to keep an eye on the bullet. This was a rare condition, but the people who suffered from it went on to live healthy lives.
“You. I want you to be my doctor,” Col said, his ice blue eyes meeting Dr. Steven’s warm ones. He nodded.
“Come to Dallas for your appointment, and we can make that happen.”
“I’ll be there.”
My heart swelled. “Me, too.” Col looked to me, and I grabbed his hand. “Every single appointment, Col.”
A throat cleared by the doorway, and we turned to find James and his director standing there. “Dr. Stevens,” James greeted.
“Agent Garner.” He looked at his tablet one more time before directing his attention towards us. “I’ll get your discharge paperwork started, okay?”
“Thank you, doctor,” my demon said.
James and Mr. Alex came into the room and shut the door. “Director Alex. Agent Garner.”
The director looked at him. “I’m sorry, have we met before?”
Col smirked; his eyes cold. “We haven’t had the pleasure, but I've met your boss.”
James’ head snapped to Mr. Alex and then back to us. “What are you talking about?” he demanded. I could see the wheels turning in both of their heads, but Mr. Alex figured it out first.
“Son of a bitch,” he hissed, pinching the bridge of his nose. My hand tightened around Col’s as the hairs on the back of my neck stood up. I looked to him to find him staring at me, his cold eyes studying me.
“How is Director Wells doing?” he asked, his eyes not leaving me.
Had he been lying to me about something else?
“Who's Director Wells?” I croaked; my voice thick with fear as a familiar sense of betrayal knocked on the door.
“Ronald Wells is the director of the FBI,” James answered, and I tore my eyes away from my demon to look at the agent. He ran his hand through his hair, ruining the hair style. I pointed to Mr. Alex with my thumb. “I thought he was the director.”
“I'm just the director over James’ department, Ms. Jones,” the man answered simply as he came around and dropped a file into Collin’s lap. “We can circle back to your involvement with Director Wells later. We need you to look this over.”
My demon’s jaw ticked and looked to James. “I’m not looking at anything until I'm out of this fucking hospital.”
Haley’s lover nodded. “Then you can come back to the field office with us after you're discharged. In cuffs, of course.”
“James,” I interjected.
He looked to me. “Let me do my job, Ms. Jones.”
I tilted my hand and slowly stood. “Then you better cuff me to him, because I am not leaving Col’s side.”
James Garner escorted Collin and me into the field office.
Handcuffed.
John Alex was ahead of us, getting us an elevator.
