But isn’t that how the world works?
The moment I say I want a life with Kane, he’s taken away from me.
The same way Owen was taken from me.
The way my baby was taken from me.
My hand goes to my belly, and I take a calming breath.
Stress isn’t good for the baby, and he or she is all I have left.
“Bri, you there?”
“Yeah,” I rasp. “I’m on my way.”

“Mr. Morgan, Jim isn’t here.”
“What do you mean, he isn’t there?” I bark at my assistant as I pull into the private garage of Morgan Enterprises.
I requested a meeting with my CFO, and he accepted it. The meeting is in three minutes, so he damn well should be there.
“He’s not here, and all his stuff is gone, including the company laptop. According to Peggy in accounting, he was boxing up a bunch of stuff yesterday, and when she asked him what was going on, he told her he was cleaning out old files.”
“Shit.” I pull into the spot. “I’ll call you right back.”
I hang up and dial Matteo since he’s the only person I know with access to Eddy. God knows what Jim took with him. I didn’t lead on that I knew what he had done, but of course his guilt caused him to put it all together.
“Yeah?”
“I need a favor. Jim Wallen, my CFO, stole from me, and knowing I was going to confront him, he bolted, taking company files and equipment with him. I need Eddy to see where he’s heading so I can get to him before he disappears.”
“You owe me, Morgan.”
Matteo hangs up, and since I can’t do shit, I sit and wait for himto hopefully call me back. I consider calling Brielle, but if she hasn’t texted me, it means she’s still asleep. Since finding out she’s pregnant, she’s been sleeping a lot more, obviously needing it.
A few minutes later, Matteo calls me back.
“He has a private flight booked at North Harbor Point Airport. It’s leaving in thirty minutes.”
“Thanks.”
Since my companyjet is currently housed there, I make it through security easily. When I pull onto the tarmac, I see Jim standing at the bottom of the stairs, talking to someone with their back to me.
When I get out, Jim glances at me, and he must say something to whoever he’s talking to because the guy turns around.
“Theodore fucking DeSantis.” I laugh humorlessly. “Why doesn’t this surprise me?”
“Mr. Morgan,” Jim rasps. “I’m sorry, but Theo blackmailed me into?—”
Before he can finish his sentence, Theo pulls out a gun and shoots the man in the chest. He falls to the ground, and I take a step back since I’m not armed.
“Fuck you!” Theo yells, pointing his gun at me. “You think you can come in here and steal my girl and my investment? I was trying to get in on the waterfront expansion, but Dominick wouldn’t give me the time of day—even with me fucking his sister. Then the bitch told me she wouldn’t date anyone associated with her brothers’ business. Yet you walked in and took everything I’d wanted!”
