Myrna looked at him and sighed. “Are you telling me that the last week and a half is because I didn’t wake up beside you?” She shook her head at him. Before she could answer, someone pounded heavily on the front door and they stared at each other in shock. While Pedro jumped off the bed, he ran out to the living room and grabbed the gun he had removed when he’d entered earlier. He looked around and saw Myrna looking out from the crack in her bedroom door. Pedro looked out the peephole that had been installed since Shay had arrived when he’d given her the golf cart.

CHAPTER 11

Pedro looked through the peephole, then back toward Myrna. “It’s Clark,” he said as he opened the door, and welcomed Clark into the bunktel. When they both entered, Myrna was in the kitchen area.

“Clark, what brings you here? Not that you’re not welcome in the home you built,” Myrna stammered over her words.

“Stop,” Clark said as he raised his hand. “As long as you stay here, this is your home. I came because Duane got a call and he sent me here.”

“From whom?” Myrna and Pedro asked at the same time. Pedro had stepped closer to her and wrapped an arm around her.

“His friend, Supervisory Special Agent Yvonne Wilson.”

“What about her?” Myrna asked.

“She’s on her way here and would like to interview Myrna.”

“When and where?” Myrna asked as she looked between Pedro and Clark.

“Over at Erin’s Way, in an hour.”

“Why there?” Myrna asked, and when she saw the looks on their faces, she held up her hand with a heavy sigh. “Because no one knows I’m at New Double. You’re here to tell me about this FBI agent coming to talk to me, and both you and Pedro will be escorting me over to Erin’s Way.”

Clark smirked as he looked at Pedro. “Smart lady.”

They shook their heads and Myrna stepped away from Pedro, went to the refrigerator and looked at Clark. “Do we have time for a quick bite?”

“Yes, I’ll step out.”

“You can join us.”

“And have Naomi kick my ass that I don’t eat what she tossed in the crockpot this morning?” They all laughed and as he stepped out, the two of them pulled out some leftovers, fixed a plate, and warmed it up in the microwave. They ate standing up, and thirty minutes later, they walked out the door, and Pedro locked up after them. He checked his gun, and put it back in the holster at his side. When they heard a noise, they saw Clark and Shay walking toward them

Shay nodded and didn’t say anything to Pedro. He climbed into his truck, and with unspoken wordsthey caravaned over to Erin’s Way, with Clark leading the way, Pedro in the middle, and Shay bringing up the rear. As soon as they entered the other ranch, and rounded the bend, several men stood there, and Myrna recognized them as Clark’s former military team.

They parked, and when they entered Duane’s office, no one really spoke.

“Thank you for coming,” Duane said. “SSA Wilson should be here any minute.”

“Do you know what it’s about besides her wanting to question me?”

“That’s all she said.”

They sat there with untouched bottles of water as they waited, and it didn’t take long before the men outside started sending text message to Duane. He rose and looked at them.

“Someone’s coming.” They all rose and went to the entrance to the barn that held Duane’s office, with Pedro and Duane standing side by side. Myrna had her hand gripping the back of Pedro’s shirt. He reached back and put his hand on her hip, reassuring her.

“That’s my vehicle,” Myrna said as she saw the first vehicle to pull into the parking area, then a big black SUV followed. A woman stepped out of the small truck, and looked around. As soon as she spotted Duane, she smiled and started forward.

“Manchester, it’s been a while.”

“It has, what fifteen, twenty years?” Duane asked as he shook her offered hand.

“More like eighteen.” She turned and held her hand out to Pedro. “Supervisory Special Agent Yvonne Wilson.”

“Pedro Alvarez.” He stepped aside and held onto Myrna’s hand.

“Myrna Trenton,” she said as she shook the agent’s hand.
