“I thought he was your pack father, not your biological dad.”

I smiled sadly. “No, he was a beta. And the sweetest person in the world.” My eyes prickled with tears and Henry leaned down to press a soft kiss to my cheek.

“That is a bit unusual,” the doctor said. “Alpha sperm does have a higher impregnation rate, but of course, that’s not a hard and fast rule.”

“Do you think her infertility is connected to whatever else is going on with her?” Liam asked.

“I can’t say for sure,” the doctor said. “It’s possible. We can definitely run tests to make sure their assessment was accurate.”

I’d never asked the guys if they wanted kids. I had never imagined myself as a mom, but what if they wanted babies?

“So, what do you think is wrong?” Bear asked, getting us back on track.

“I really can’t say without running tests, but rest assured, we will cover all our bases and figure this out.”

“But she’s going to be fine, right?” he asked.

Dr. Ash gave him a patient smile. “She’s in good hands, I promise.”

Bear opened his mouth as if to say something else, and I reached over to grasp his wrist. “I’m sure the doctor has better things to do than talk with us all day.”

“I’m sure she doesn’t,” Gray said, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. “Nothing’s more important than you.”

I huffed an exaggerated breath, meeting the doctor’s gaze. She looked like she was fighting a smile.

“It seems like you’re also in good hands here,” she said. “We’ll start with a series of tests and go from there. This has been a lot to take in for today, so I suggest you take the rest of theday to relax and come back tomorrow morning for blood work and an MRI of your head and neck.”

I nodded, grateful that I wouldn’t have to spend any more time in the hospital.

“I’ll see you tomorrow once we have your results, and then we’ll make a game plan,” Dr. Ash said before leaving.

“Are you sure she’s the best there is?” Gray asked once the door shut behind her. “Maybe we need a second opinion.” He rested his hands on my shoulders.

“She has excellent credentials,” Henry said. “My mom said she’s one of the best doctors she’s worked with.”

“I like her,” I said. “And now I’m ready to get out of here.”

“My favorite restaurant isn’t far from here,” Henry said. “Why don’t we head there for lunch?”

“That sounds great.” I shot him a grateful smile as he pulled me out of my chair and into his arms.

“One step at a time, gorgeous.” He tilted my chin up and pressed a soft kiss to my lips.

“One step at a time,” I repeated as we headed out of the room.

The restaurant Henry took us to was some weird hipster place that, for some inexplicable reason, decided having a finished ceiling was too boring. Large ducts crisscrossed above us, and the tables were made with uneven wood slabs with metal pipes for legs. The food was decent, not that I was paying much attention to what I was eating. My eyes were fixated on my omega as she pushed food around her plate.

“Do you want something different to eat, princess?” I asked softly, running my hand down her back.

“Oh no, I’m just not very hungry,” she said, glancing up at me.

“You still need to eat,” I said sternly. “Do you want to try some of mine?” I’d gotten the most normal thing on the menu I could find—a burger—although they’d topped it with all sorts of weird shit, including mac and cheese. I begrudgingly had to admit it was pretty good. Before Westin could answer, I placed a quarter of the burger on her plate next to her avocado toast. “There, now you have some real food to eat.”

She ignored the burger but snaked her hand across me to grab one of Henry’s fries. “You’re the weird one. Who orders a side salad instead of fries?”
