Interview of David Lasalle

Vice President of Marketing at Clapard

Conducted by Officer Truchaud of the Criminal BrigadeAlso present: Amina Dembele, translator

Officer Truchaud:I’m sorry we haven’t been able to pay proper attention to your claim until now. You see, with all the very important people in town, we’re on high alert. And we get a lot of calls. A lot of complaints.

David Lasalle:This isn’t just any complaint. That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you fordaysnow. This is a matter of the utmost importance.

Officer Truchaud:At what point did you become aware that you had lost the necklace?

David Lasalle:It’s not a necklace! It’s a work of art from our archives, worth two million U.S. dollars. A vintage piece worn by Grace… Or was it Aud… Someone extremely famous.

Officer Truchaud:So is it a ring? A brooch? We need to know what we’re looking for.

David Lasalle:It’s a neckpiece. And you haven’t been looking for it.That’sthe problem.

Officer Truchaud:Is that different from a necklace?

David Lasalle:To imply that we simply “lost” such an important piece of jewelry is ridiculous.Ridiculous.And you can quote me on that.

Officer Truchaud:Sir, you are being recorded.

David Lasalle:Right.

Officer Truchaud:Could you please clarify the details of the…misplacement of the necklace? When and where did you last see it?

David Lasalle:We do not “misplace” valuable jewelry at Clapard.

Officer Truchaud:Sir, can you answer the question? We’re trying to help you here. Where and when did you last see the…item?

David Lasalle:Last week, at our New York office, when our team was preparing to travel to Cannes.

Officer Truchaud:So you haven’t seen it since you arrived in Cannes?

David Lasalle:Well…

Officer Truchaud:Do you have any proof that you brought the necklace to Cannes?

David Lasalle:Of course we brought the necklace to Cannes. We had planned for a special someone to wear it. I can’t tell you who. Company secrets. Though obviously she never got to wear it, since it was stolen.

Officer Truchaud:The question was, do you have proof that the necklace was ever in Cannes?

David Lasalle:It was.

Officer Truchaud:And you can prove it?

David Lasalle:Let’s not dwell on semantics. We need this case to be taken seriously.

Officer Truchaud:I understand. But I’d really like to discuss another urgent matter with you.
