Again, no one made a move.
Then Lou grabbed each of our arms.
“What if… Let’s say one of us might have had a motive to want him, you know… What do we do then?”
Cannes Film FestivalDay Thirteen
(The Day After)
Interview of Marnie Redd
Junior Publicist
Conducted by Officer Truchaud of the Criminal Brigade
Also present: Amina Dembele, translator
Officer Truchaud:Did anything strange happen at the party?
Marnie Redd:It was all very strange to me. I come from a pretty humble background. A lobster platter is strange to me. People drinking Dom Pérignon like it’s Diet Coke is strange to me… You know, this is my first time in France. My first time in Europe. Okay, it’s my first time outside the U.S. I’m sure people were doing drugs. I’ve never done drugs. I mean, who can afford it? I guess most of the people on that yacht could afford drugs.
Officer Truchaud:Did you see people doing drugs? Maybe too many drugs? Anyone acting erratic?
Marnie Redd:No, nothing like that. In fact, can I retract my statement? I shouldn’t have said that people were doingdrugs. I shouldn’t be spreading even more gossip during a time like this. I don’t want to give the impression that I’m not taking this seriously.
Officer Truchaud:It’s a fair assumption.
Marnie Redd:But I didn’t see anyone doing drugs. Or acting erratic or anything like that.
Officer Truchaud:So whatdidyou see? Run me through the end of the party.
Marnie Redd:A lot of people believed the movie would win the Palme. No one wanted to say it out loud, but there was definitely a celebratory mood in the air. It was very festive. Oh gosh, I hope this doesn’t count as me spreading gossip again? We didn’tknowwho would win.
Officer Truchaud:That is fine, Ms. Redd.
Marnie Redd:Good.
Officer Truchaud:So the party nears the end…
Marnie Redd:Right, well, I hadn’t been on a yacht before. Obviously. I was having so much fun that I didn’t even realize the crowd was thinning. People had started to get on these little boats to get back to shore. Everyone was very, jolly, I guess I would call it? I saw more than one person hang overboard to throw up. Gross.
Officer Truchaud:And then?
Marnie Redd:I felt a little seasick. My feet hurt, but I decided to walk back to the hotel, to get some fresh air.
Officer Truchaud:You walked back alone in the middle of the night?
Marnie Redd:I did.
Officer Truchaud:It’s a forty-five minute walk.
Marnie Redd:It felt nice.
Officer Truchaud:Did you talk to anyone back at the hotel?
Marnie Redd:I was just getting to that. Yes, I bumped into Ben in the lobby. I told him I was sorry about everything that happened between us. I wished him all the best, and I meant it.
Officer Truchaud:Mister Shank mentioned a screenplay that Dorian Fisher was interested in acquiring for a very large sum of money.
