Honny
Yeah, you rejected an architect for him.
Cherry
We’ve only been dating a few months.
Joy
I got engaged to Jeff after three months.
Cherry
You were 18 years old and very eager to have post-marital sex.
Joy
We were in love!!
Faith
It’s going to be so weird having Thanksgiving without Tom.
Joy
Seriously!! The last time I saw Tom was LAST Thanksgiving.
Honny
The last time I saw Tom was on 60 Minutes.
Joy
Who’s going to eat my brocco-slaw salad at family gatherings if Tom isn’t there???
Cherry
Literally no one, Joy.
Honny
I don’t think Cherry should bring a new man to Thanksgiving until she’s divorced.
When are you getting divorced, Cherry? Have you even started?
Joy
Divorces take forever. I want to meet this new guy SOON!
Chapter 33
Cherry hadn’t planned to invite Russ to Thanksgiving.
They were walking Stevie in the dark. They’d gone to a fundraiser right after work, and Cherry had pushed Russ to leave early—she kept thinking of Stevie at home, pacing the foyer and watching the door, possibly chewing up paper products.
Stevie missed Tom.
“Having a dog is worse than having a kid,” Russ said, “because a kid will eventually walk themselves.” Russ was shivering. He was wearing a thin topcoat over a wool suit. He was dressed for commuting.
