“Maybe she was sent here because they think someone on the inside did something that forced her to come here. What if they wanted her over here because they are working with the terrorists?”
“You don’t think she’s working with the terrorists?”
Bean slowly shook his head as he thought about his conversation with Garnet. “No. I don’t think she would. I don’t know her well, but based on the few minutes we chatted, I didn’t get any weird feelings about her.”
“So your Spidey senses weren’t tingling?” Stanley asked.
“No.”
“Who the hell would screw with computers to get someone over?” Link asked.
Bean shrugged. “No clue, but whoever it was, they are probably already on a watch list somewhere.”
“No, I mean, which employee would do that?”
“Someone who suddenly got an influx of cash.”
Keel grunted. “There’s always someone who will double-cross their country. We see it all the time. Someone needs to look into the banking information of the people working here.”
“We can do that once we finish this mission,” Chase said.
Bean nodded. “We need to be careful going in. The people holding her might know we are coming.”
They all nodded. They knew they had targets on their backs when they went into any mission, but having a target placed there from someone on the inside sucked.
Chapter 6
Garnet was relievedthat Short came into the room seconds after she explained to Tall why she couldn’t just give them access to one system to do what they wanted.
“I need to know exactly what you want to do so I can get you into the correct system.”
Tall let go of a heavy sigh. “Fine. You tell her what we’re doing.”
Garnet sat back, waiting for them to start talking. She didn’t know their names, but she studied them, memorizing their faces so that if she got out, she could give a detailed description of both of them.
Short pulled up a stool and sat, a smile on his face. If she were in any other situation, she might believe he was a decent person. But he was in on this abduction thing, forcing her to do their bidding.
“We need access to a weapon that we can control and aim at your presidential palace in DC.”
He said it so plainly, without any anger or braggadocio, that while his voice sounded reasonable, the request sounded absolutely crazy. She almost laughed, but she held it in.
“I don’t understand.”
Tall slammed his hands down on the desk. “See, she won’t help us.”
She shook her head. “I didn’t say that. I just don’t understand why you can’t use a weapon over here.”
Tall threw up his hands and huffed out a breath. He was acting irrationally angry. “She is being unreasonable. We should cut off a finger each minute she doesn’t help us.”
Her jaw dropped open as she stared at him. He was asking her to do something impossible. Or nearly impossible. She could probably pull it off, but it would be very difficult. Like she would need all ten fingers, and maybe more, to program fast enough to hack into any system that would come close to what they wanted done.
If she were on a military base or a ship, it would be easier, but still difficult. Add to the mix, firing the weapon at DC would raise all kinds of flags. There were checks in the system that would prevent a direct assault. The request sounded ridiculous because it was.
“Stop, Jamal?—”
“No names!” Tall yelled.
Now she knew his name was Jamal. That would help once she got free. Her stomach twisted. She may not be set free. This could end with her death. Jamal was already threatening to chop off her fingers.
