“The speed healing certainly takes all the fun out of it.”

“Could you do it?” I asked. “I get that you might be feeling woozy, but until we figure out how to feed you, it would get your mind off of it.”

“I think if I do have super speed, it’s not going to kick in until I eat something.”

I looked to Khalid since he was the scholar and a font of information. If Lucian was someone who ate people, then he needed to know that and Khalid should say it in front of him.

“Any gods you’ve come across in your studies with red eyes?” I asked.

“That’s a demon thing,” Liam said. “He wants to eat babies.”

“I do not!”

“Demons are like fairies,” Khalid said. “Every culture has a concept of them and honestly, even with supernaturals being real, some of that could just be humans using fear to control each other. There are several gods with red eyes, though. Anubis and Horus were related and Horus was said to have red eyes. You aren’t from the right region, but Kali did, too. Lucian could still be a god instead of an original. Ares was supposed to as well.”

“I still think he’s jonesing for babies.”

“He’s not going to be able to go without food for that long, so we’re going to need to figure it out. Especially with all the walking we’re going to be doing,” I said.

I might not know Lucian very well, but I knew what I was looking at. He wasn’t doing well and wouldn’t last much longer if we didn’t figure out what he needed. I got that Headmaster Mykene literally had no idea who any of us might have been in our previous lives. She only had guesses about Liam because of how he acted and she was wrong.

I guess I just felt like we should have been given more than just food rations just in case someone on our team needed something different.

If I had super speed, I would have been gone by now because I was pretty sure I knew what I wanted to eat. Sage smelledamazing. So did Khalid. I didn’t even like Liam and I’d get my revenge for that kick, so heshouldhave smelled rancid to me, but he didn’t.

I didn’t want to eat a baby, but I very much wanted to sink my teeth into any of them and see what happened. Sage especially since she smelled the best. I’d never hurt her. I didn’t know why, but I wasverysure of that.

I wasn’t a violent person. I didn’t even kill spiders. I just walked them outside, but I really wouldn’t mind hurting Liam. If I needed to bite someone, it should be him. Except I couldn’t.The wildlife agreed to help Sage because of Liam. He was the only one who could communicate with them and if he was dead, I didn’t know if they would still help feed Sage.

I couldn’t risk it and I respected Khalid, so I wouldn’t bite him. I might heal fast for some reason, but that arrowhurt.I didn’t want to get attacked again because I didn’t want to get hurt and I didn’t want Sage hurt. Liam’sonlyredeeming quality was that he was that protective of Sage.

Khalid and Liam seemed to be able to navigate by the sky. Excuse me for never thinking I’d need that when I had GPS on my phone. I wasn’t expecting my parents toletme get kidnapped and dumped in the butt crack of England.

The new senses were a little neat, even if I’d gone all bitey and hungry all the time.

“We’re about to get ambushed again. I know what fairies smell like now. It’s not fairies this time.”

I was glad. Fairies smelled fantastic and if one of them hadn’t shot me, I might have figured out I had the urge to bite someone sooner and killed that fairy. I didn’t want to kill anyone.

I didn’t want to bite them either. There were all kinds of germs on people’s skin that I could get in my mouth. What if they’d gone their entire life without properly washing their neck with soap? I liked my food properly seasoned, but not like that.

And why was I even thinking of people as food?

I’d figured at least one thing out. If someone was attacking us in these trials, taking their time doing it, and being pretty obvious about it, they weren’t just really fucking arrogant. They had super speed, and I was the only person on my team who could see them like that.

I might evenhavesuper speed, which would be rather neat. Sage said the group of fairies didn’t want to hurt us, but we had fairy lore in Romania, too. Some were good, and some weren’t.I didn’t think any of the fairies who attacked us were Romanian fairies.

Just because we met a group of good fairies didn’t mean there weren’t bad people at this school. I had massive trust issueslongbefore my parents let me get kidnapped. This group could actually want to kill us.

I’d been toldmyeyes flashed red and Khalid explained there were plenty of gods with red eyes, but I didn’t particularly like that this group of supernaturals all had glowing red eyes. As much as Iloathedto agree with him, my mind automatically went to demon.

When one approached me, I hissed at him since that seemed to work with the fairy I caught, but something different happened this time. My mouth hurt. What the fuck? I tookexcellent careof my mouth and even I knew one day sleeping outside without indoor plumbing wasn’t going to mess up my teeth.

And then everything just stopped. The group stopped their attack and prostrated themselves before me.

Which was fucked up because I don’t think I would have liked that even if I was first in line for the throne.

Lucian was clearly an original instead of a god. Well, he was a god to whatever these people were, but his original life was some kind of mortal who meddled in magic. Lucian looked wholly uncomfortable at all the prostrated people for someone who was supposed to be a prince. Uncomfortable enough to not ask the right questions.
